Let's tie the knots! If you're looking for unique and relaxing indoor activities then learn how to make beautiful Hina dolls at home using Mizuhiki Japanese paper cord knots!
In this fun online class, you'll learn how to tie basic knots (three types of knots) and we will make a beautiful Hina dolls frame.
Hina dolls are traditionally decorated for the girls in a family on the third of March, which is one of the five seasonal festivals in Japan. They represent a Heian period wedding, they are usually described as the Emperor and Empress of Japan. The family prays for the girls good health and growth.
We'll make lots of knots with Mizuhiki paper cords in the class. The completed frame will be symbolic for "tie the knot" and "paper anniversary" as well as "good relationship".
Az will also demonstrate how the knots can be arranged to make earrings and gift-giving decorations. You can add on an earring kit (gold or sparkly white paper cords with hypoallergenic stainless steel hooks or clip-ons) when you book this class.
Let's have fun together!
Please note: You must book at least 11 days before your online class as materials are taking longer to get delivered due to lockdown restrictions.

Hi, I'm Az. I'm an Interior Designer and a Japanese Mizuhiki artist.
What is Japanese Mizuhiki art?
Mizuhiki is a traditional Japanese paper cord used originally for special occasions, such as engagement gifts from the groom's family to the bride's family, and for gift money envelopes. Yes, they are made of paper. The core of Mizuhiki cord is twisted paper and then dyed or wrapped with coloured thread, then knotted into shapes. It is also used to tie a Samurai’s and Sumo wrestler’s top knot! Today we use it for making jewellery and other beautiful objects.
I moved from Canberra to Perth in January 2023, and now my new art activities will be refreshed and am seeking further goals to share with more people. "Tie the knots" I also sell items from my Etsy store under the name happyJPdesigns.
