Crystal’s Perfumery making class in Biu Biu Studios was such a great experience! This was my first ClassBento experience of being the sole student in the session. Crystal was very knowledgeable in the ingredients in her perfumery class. She also has very unique ingredients like oolong, ocean, forest inspired oils that increases the possibilities of perfumes and anyone can make. She started offCrystal’s Perfumery making class in Biu Biu Studios was such a great experience! This was my first ClassBento experience of being the sole student in the session. Crystal was very knowledgeable in the ingredients in her perfumery class. She also has very unique ingredients like oolong, ocean, forest inspired oils that increases the possibilities of perfumes and anyone can make. She started off the session by introducing the types of fragrances and the roles of top, middle and base notes in perfumery. I also noticed that she has all her oil selections neatly organised (top, middle, base notes) so it was easy to keep track of what notes I was trying. Next, I was allowed to smell each component and Crystal assisted me in remembering the notes that I liked. In the mean time, Crystal also answered my questions about the roles and effects of each oil to the over all fragrance. This allowed me filter out the oils that I would not have like in the fragrance I was trying to make. The next part was exciting where Crystal helped me make a pre-composition of 5 oils that I liked onto a smelling strip. Based on this composition, I was able to explore adding and taking off little elements. For each variation of the composition, Crystal encouraged me to write the oils and take notes of how the smell changed. And so at the end of this part, I had several smelling strips that I could compare next to each other. This step really helped me visually and mentally take a note on how a small change can impact the over all fragrance. Once I was happy with the composition, Crystal demonstrated how to use a weighing balance and a beaker to weigh out oils of my composition. In this step, I was able to test out the ratios of the oils and fine tune the balance of scents. I really like this part of the class because the weight allowed me to control and adjust the oil ratios accurately. You can mix and match and balance the perfume oil mix/concentrate until you reach a certain amount of grams. Crystal was super nice and complimented me that I made a well composed fragrance. Crystal was very patient with me and we had a very friendly conversation while mixing essential oils. After that, Crystal and I went to the next step of adding the perfumer’s alcohol, fixative and water to the perfume concentrate. It is in this section too that I was offered to add the shimmering effect to the perfume. I didn’t opt for it because I already liked the colour of what I made. (It still looks pretty cool though!) After sealing the bottle, I got to make a fully customised label for my creation. Crystal was very helpful with formatting my label to make sure that it came out perfect. The label makes it look like a legitimate fragrance you could buy from a store. The gift packaging of the perfume is very unique and beautiful! I went home with a fragrance that I am definitely happy about and will wear all the time! This is such a great class by Crystal. Definitely great to book with a friend or even solo! Henry was a great teacher and made it fun and very interesting. We learnt so much about the different bees and how they get on through life and the different stages. The dressing up was good fun in the suits and then seeing the bees was brilliant. Would definitely go again during the summer when they are more active. A truly amazing and extremely fun experience! A great gift especially for a birthday. Hideko was a warm, kind, patient teacher that carefully went through each step of the process. The venue was a beautiful studio decorated with art created by Hideko herself. There was a great selection of coloured glass to choose from to appease everyone's palate. Mark was very patient and, after a detailed demonstration, I began to create on my own with Mark fully attentive but with the aim that I created the pieces.
