The Japanese art of flower arranging has a rich history. Ikebana translates into “making flowers alive” and has been a popular form of Japanese floristry since the 7th century. Traditionally used as a form of religious offering, ikebana has grown in popularity and is considered one of three classical Japanese arts of refinement, along with incense appreciation and tea ceremony. Ikebana focuses on building an arrangement that combines elements of colour, line, form and function. They can vary wildly in size and shape, but will always achieve a balance and cohesion unlike any other form of floristry in the world.
Our ikebana classes in Melbourne will teach you the core principles of the Japanese tradition of flower arrangement, and what is required to create an authentic and traditional ikebana arrangement. You’ll learn how to match colours and natural elements so they complement each other in very unique ways. You’ll be shown cutting techniques and tips on shaping branches and leaves to bring the most out of your arrangement. Ikebana is an exceptionally peaceful and enlightening method of flower arranging and a wonderful way to get back in touch with yourself and nature.
Our experienced Ikebana instructors (or Ikebanists) will give you the tools you need to get the most out of your flower arranging workshops in Melbourne. Keeping within traditional customs, you’ll discover how to not only make a beautiful piece of traditional Japanese art, but you’ll discover the history behind it and what makes ikebana so special. For one of the most unique flower arranging experiences Melbourne has to offer, look no further than the art of ikebana. Combining meditation, craftsmanship, and a touch of nature, ClassBento’s ikebana workshops stand alone as an authentic and enlightening taste of traditional Japanese culture.
Flower arranging workshops in Melbourne take on a variety of shapes and sizes, and ikebana is one of our most unique cultural experiences. Ikebana is a wonderful alternative to standard, western flower arranging courses, particularly if you’re looking to jazz up a group event. Individuals who want to expand their skillset are more than welcome, but many of our ikebana workshops in Melbourne do private bookings, making it ideal for birthday parties, hen’s parties, and engagement party options.
Like most of our Melbourne workshops, ikebana prides itself on using sustainably sourced materials and resources. Japanese flower arranging promotes unity with nature, and part of designing your own ikebana is learning how to create an arrangement that enables the plants to survive. Ikebana is, at its core, a fundamental form of self-expression, and is more closely aligned with art than botany. A study out of Western Australia found that individuals who engaged in creative pursuits on a regular basis found their mental health to be more stable than their uncreative counterparts. Adding a touch of nature to either your living space or office has been found to improve mood, decrease anxiety and actually increase oxygen purity in the air. Offices that contain a green space noted a 44 percent decrease in anger and hostility and a 38 percent reduction in employee fatigue over 18 months.
As well as the external benefits, the practice of ikebana is a meditative process and functions as an effective and rewarding form of “mindful movement meditation”. This can be very effective in managing stress and anxiety that can accompany work and family pressures, and regular meditation exercises have been found to extend your life.
