In this story:
Step inside That Paper Joint on Brunswick’s main drag, Sydney Road, and you’ll immediately feel at home. The cosy atmosphere is no coincidence, instead a testament to the love co-founders Maximilian Malone and Zoe Crook have poured into the craft studio since its opening in 2021.
Drawing on their travels in India, education in visual art and design, and colourful work experiences in Melbourne’s hospitality industry, Max and Zoe have carefully curated an enchanting retro-inspired space, dedicated to the humble paper and scissors.
Stroll past on a Friday night and you’ll see a buzzing community inside, all huddled around cookbook clippings, nostalgic comics and vintage magazine snippets. And that’s exactly what their collage experiences are designed to do—foster connection, slow your mind and transport you back in time, all while creating something pretty special.
That Paper Joint’s mission is to…
“Join people through paper, champion sustainable creativity and show everyone that an artist is not a special kind of person, rather every person is a special kind of artist.”
The best thing about collage art is…
“That it’s a true adventure and quite addictive; you never know where you might end up! You might plan your collage creation but usually chance, surprise and luck also play a key factor.”
Step into our studio and you…
“Won’t get far before you’re greeted by Franky-Rocket, our front-of-house pup. Once Franky has welcomed you in, you’ll be free to wander around the space and be transported into a colourful world bursting with treasures, artworks and other strange curiosities.”
Creating a collage is all about…
“Renewing your creative confidence. Our collage sessions always focus on the process, not the final result. We encourage guests to be playful and always kind to themselves because many people who attend are potentially exploring their creative side for the first time in a while.”
Our classes help people connect by…
“The way we make the experience feel like something closer and comparable to going to your favourite bar or cafe. The sessions are about fun, laughs and providing an intimate and original setting for memorable experiences.”
Sustainability at That Paper Joint looks like…
“Using second-hand tools and materials wherever possible. We want to have fun with our art but not to the detriment of the planet.”
