What you'll do
If you've ever been curious about the publishing world or you'd like to learn more about graphic design, come along to this course and dive into the world of magazine publishing!During this five-week course, you'll work together with your instructor and fellow students as a team to create a group-made publication. From idea conception to creating content, editing, and designing, you'll get to oversee the whole process, guided by your friendly tutor. Then, at the end of the course, you'll have your very own printed magazine!Week one
- Introduction into magazines alongside an in-depth presentation from Terra Firma's very own Editor in Chief.
- Collectively start to conceptualise the theme for your group magazine.
- How to structure a magazine.
- The importance of collaboration and connection.
- How to distribute and sell your magazine.
- How to select and collate images, edit text, and create a visually interesting publication.
- How to design your front cover and spine.
Knowledge required
Beginner or intermediate.

Your teacher
Sophie Willison is a freelance artist passionate about teaching. She has been self publishing her own arts and photography magazine, terra firma, for almost a decade, bringing together artists from all over the world to collectively realise an annual theme. Sophie has a keen interest in the arts including analogue photography, design, publishing, curating and editing and is always working on exciting new projects. She has guest lectured and given workshops at a variety of institutions from Westminster University, Guildford College and Parliament Hill school. She has run and successfully delivered workshops as part of programmes based in Normandy, France and Oxford, UK. Most recently being invited to design workshops in Sydney, Australia for contemporary cultural institutions such as Mosman Art Gallery, Campbelltown Arts Centre and Bankstown Arts Centre.
