Join this this engaging Sydney workshop where you will learn how to create your own custom-lined lampshade from start to finish.
Say goodbye to sewing and hello to modern lampshade making techniques using professional-grade supplies. The highlight of this class is the creation of a fabulous lined lampshade (with your choice of lining on the inside AND outside of the shade!) that will add a touch of elegance to any space. Not only will you be able to bring your creation home, but you will also gain a thorough grounding in the craft of modern lampshade making.
Our talented guest instructor, Kate, will guide you step by step through the shade-making process, sharing numerous tricks and tips of the trade. So don't worry if you're new to lampshade making---we're here to make this experience as enjoyable as possible for you.
This workshop is all about your creativity, so BYO fabrics x2. These fabrics will become the lampshade so think about your decor and personal taste. There are no rules---mismatching patterns work, as do stripes, plains, or geometrics. We highly recommend lightweight materials such as cotton, poly-cotton mix, or linen. Please avoid loose, open, coarse weave; upholstery weight; slinky, sheer, or stretchy fabrics.
Lined shades have fabric on both the outside and inside of the shade which means the light does not shine through the walls of the shade but is cast outwards, up and down from the top and bottom of the shade. Keep this in mind when choosing your designs---some shades made with shiny/metallic linings create really spectacular glowing results!
We understand that you may want to turn this into a pair or try out a different style. That's why take-home lampshade kits will be available for purchase, so you can continue your lampshade making journey at home.
We provide tea, coffee and some treats throughout the workshop. However, feel free to bring along your own drinks and party treats for an extra special occasion.
Join us in our lovely workshop space in St Peters, Sydney, and experience the joy of creating your own bespoke lampshade.
Please be aware that all bookings for this workshop are final and strictly non-refundable. If you're unable to attend, you can send someone in your place. In the unlikely event that we don't reach the minimum number of participants required to run the workshop, we may need to cancel the class. Rest assured that if this happens, you will receive a full refund or the option to reschedule if new dates are available.

Knowledge required
  • No prior knowledge or skills are required. This is slightly more involved than our Intro to Lampshade Making workshop (tip: Choose the Intro to Lampshade Making Workshop run in the morning of the same day if you want to learn all the skills before making this lined shade).
  • Please note that a reasonable degree of physical dexterity with your hands is required for this workshop. Accurate scissor cutting and the ability to work in a standing position are recommended but not essential.
What you'll get
  • All the supplies are included in the workshop fee (except fabric), including professional-quality adhesive backings, frames and tools.
  • You'll be making a drum shade measuring 35cm in diameter and 25cm in height, which can be used as a table, floor or pendant lamp.
  • We have good coffee and tea making facilities, as well as some treats to keep you going during the session. If you prefer a barista-made coffee, pop into Aslan Cafe (just up the road) before the workshop.
What to bring
  • You will need to bring 2 pieces of fabric---one for the inner and one for the outer, each measuring 130cm x 50cm. It is essential that you bring your fabrics cut to these sizes before arriving (we don't have time or space to deal with meterage of fabric).
  • Fabric can be patterned or plain.
  • The TYPE of fabric is MUCH more important than patterns or plain! DO choose lightweight or midweight materials---cotton, or poly-cotton mix, linen or any other lightweight natural fibers i.e. quilting fabric is IDEAL!
  • DO NOT choose loose, open, coarse weave, upholstery weight, slinky, sheer or stretchy.
  • Your favourite pair of "good fabric scissors" (don't worry if you don't have any---there'll be spares available).
  • An old credit or store loyalty card (something that doesn't matter if it gets a bit bent).
  • Craft Scissors (any old scissors---don't have to be sharp).

After years of working as a professional upholsterer Kate started running upholstery and lampshade workshops and quickly discovered she loved teaching.

With so much demand for Kate's workshops she has stepped away from upholstery to focus on lampshades and established The Lampshade Workroom. Kate has run a few workshops with us at Made By Me Workshop, they have been fully booked with a wait list in place, we love having her in the workshop and love seeing the amazing lampshades made with her expert guidance.

Made by Me Workshop is about helping people to connect with their "inner creative" and have some fun while making beautiful things from quality materials in our friendly & vibrant studio space in the heart of the inner west!
Established in 2017 after Rebecca Doyle decided to take a career break and chose to revisit her childhood love for arts & crafts. Rebecca grew up in a large family where money was tight, after school activities where mostly homegrown and usually involved a sheet of cardboard, a glue stick and some glitter! It is probably no surprise to learn that Rebecca followed a creative path to study Fashion & Textile Design at University!
After a few more decades (than Rebecca will publicly admit to) and a long and varied career in the fashion industry, Rebecca wanted to get back to creating beautiful, one-of-a-kind objects - Made By Me Workshop is the result of where this path led.
Rebecca loves that moment of pride that comes over each participant's face when they look at what they have created and say to themselves "Wow - I made this & I love it!"
Made by Me Workshop run a variety of creative workshops, hen’s parties, private parties and corporate events from their warehouse space in St Peters including Resin Art, Resin Jewellery & Mould Making, Soap Making, Terrazzo Homewares, Punch Needle, Macrame and many more.
