Discover the art of lampshade making in our popular Sydney-based workshop! Led by expert lampshade maker Kate Malfroy from The Lampshade Workroom, this hands-on class provides a perfect introduction to modern shade making. Whether you’re a complete beginner or a seasoned crafter, this creative workshop offers a unique opportunity to design your own custom lampshade to brighten up your space.
Workshop Highlights:
  • Choose Your Style: Create either a medium-sized drum or tapered shade, with drum shades being a bit easier for beginners.
  • Expert Instruction: Professional shade-maker Kate Malfroy brings years of experience to guide you through each step. Her passion for beautiful textiles and love of teaching ensures an engaging and fun workshop experience.
  • Take-Home Skills and Finished Product: Walk away with your own unique lampshade ready to use at home, and a whole new skill set! (Supplies are available for purchase if you wish to continue shade-making at home.)
What to Bring:
Fabric: We recommend light to medium-weight natural fibres such as cotton or linen, like those used in quilting or dress-making. Avoid heavy-weight fabrics used for upholstery or furnishings, as well as sheer, stretchy, or stiff materials.
Fabric Dimensions: 110 cm wide x 50 cm.
  • Fabric Preparation: Please ensure your fabric is cut to size and crease-free before coming, as we won’t have time to iron it during the workshop.
  • Optional Supplies: Bring a pair of sharp fabric scissors if you have them (we do have spares).
A limited selection of beautiful printed fabrics will be available for purchase at the workshop (prices from $10–$20).
Included in Your Workshop:
  • All Shade-Making Materials: Professional-grade frames, adhesive backing, and tools (fabric not included).
  • Refreshments: Enjoy complimentary tea, coffee, and light treats. If you have specific dietary needs, feel free to bring your own refreshments.
  • Take-Home Kits: Kits in a variety of shapes and sizes are available for purchase if you’d like to create more shades at home.
Additional Option: Advanced Shade-Making Demonstration
After the main workshop, you’re invited to stay for an advanced technique demonstration, where Kate will showcase how to make lined shades (fabric on both inside and outside) and makeover vintage shades.
Arrival: Please arrive by 9:15 am for a prompt 9:30 am start.
Join us and add a personal touch to your home decor while learning a unique craft that combines style, skill, and creativity.
Cancellation Policy: please note that all bookings for this workshop are final and strictly non-refundable. If you're unable to attend, you can send someone in your place. In the unlikely event that we don't reach the minimum number of participants required to run the workshop, we may cancel the class. In such cases, you will receive a full refund or the option to reschedule if new dates are available.

Made by Me Workshop is about helping people to connect with their "inner creative" and have some fun while making beautiful things from quality materials in our friendly & vibrant studio space in the heart of the inner west!
Established in 2017 after Rebecca Doyle decided to take a career break and chose to revisit her childhood love for arts & crafts. Rebecca grew up in a large family where money was tight, after school activities where mostly homegrown and usually involved a sheet of cardboard, a glue stick and some glitter! It is probably no surprise to learn that Rebecca followed a creative path to study Fashion & Textile Design at University!
After a few more decades (than Rebecca will publicly admit to) and a long and varied career in the fashion industry, Rebecca wanted to get back to creating beautiful, one-of-a-kind objects - Made By Me Workshop is the result of where this path led.
Rebecca loves that moment of pride that comes over each participant's face when they look at what they have created and say to themselves "Wow - I made this & I love it!"
Made by Me Workshop run a variety of creative workshops, hen’s parties, private parties and corporate events from their warehouse space in St Peters including Resin Art, Resin Jewellery & Mould Making, Soap Making, Terrazzo Homewares, Punch Needle, Macrame and many more.
