In this portrait sketch workshop, you will learn key techniques and skills to create a charcoal sketch of a person using appropriate tools. You will choose a photo reference of a person with distinct and interesting features to bring out their beauty in your sketch.
  • Practise correct pencil skills for sketch techniques, shading techniques, and blending techniques on smaller paper before attempting the portrait sketch.
  • Create 5-10 samples for each skill to build your confidence and foundation.
  • Use a photo reference or object as a guide during practise.
Throughout the workshop, you will work with charcoal and learn how to enhance the features of your subject through art. This experience may feel challenging at first, but with practise and guidance, you will see improvements in your skills.
By the end of the workshop, you will have a beautiful charcoal portrait sketch that captures the essence and beauty of your subject. Get ready to transform your skills and create an aesthetic piece of art with this engaging activity.
Knowledge required
No skills or knowledge required. This package is beginner-friendly, but can also be useful for those with more experience and wish to acquire additional skills.
 
What to bring
  • Large sketch paper, either A2, A3 or if you prefer A4. I encourage sketching on a large size, so go for A2 or A3 rather than A4.
  • Charcoal pencil. I find soft brings out better quality in the work, but you can try other levels of hardness as different people have naturally different strengths in pressure when they make a mark. This is the same if you choose charcoal sticks. If you prefer to start with graphite pencils as you might not be confident with charcoal, then I encourage 2B, 4B and 6B pencils and HB for some foundation lines that can be easily erased.
  • Blending stumps.
  • Tissue paper and a cup filled with water.
