Course Content and Structure
This two-day intensive workshop runs from 9 AM to 5 PM each day, combining expert demonstrations with guided practice at your own lathe station. Each session builds on the last, ensuring you develop strong foundational skills in both spindle and bowl turning.
Day 1: Spindle Turning Fundamentals
Introduction to the lathe, safety protocols, and tool selection.
Practicing essential cuts: V-cuts, beads, and coves.
Creating a simple spindle-turned project, such as a spinning top.
Day 2: Bowl Turning & Surface Finishing
Transitioning from spindle to bowl turning.
Shaping a bowl using gouges and refining the form.
Exploring decorative techniques like texturing and advanced sanding.
Applying finishing techniques for a polished final piece.
Hands-On Experience
From the moment you step into the workshop, you’ll be at the lathe, putting theory into practice. With expert guidance at every step, you’ll refine your technique and gain the confidence to continue woodturning beyond the class. Knowledge required
Suitable for beginners with no experience up to intermediate students. Children 14+ are welcome to participate in this course.
 
What you'll get
  • Take home everything you make.
  • PPE, equipment and tools supplied however students are welcome to bring their own.
What to bring
  • Students wishing to bring their own PPE should come with a face mask, safety glasses or goggles and earmuffs or earplugs.
  • Closed shoes are a mandatory requirement for all students.
  • Those with their own turning chisels should also bring them along to get better accustomed at using them.
  • We have a kitchen onsite with fridge and microwave for those that want to bring their own food, and there are also takeaway options within walking distance.
