Watercolour Painting Course for Beginners

This course offers a fantastic opportunity to explore the techniques and methods of watercolour painting. Students will begin with the fundamentals, learning about watercolour as a medium and understanding how it differs from other painting techniques. By the end of this journey, you will have gained essential skills and knowledge to create beautiful watercolour works.

Course Content:

Introduction to Watercolour Materials

Learn about brushes, colours, and other tools
Understand the effective use of each material

Wash Techniques

Master wet-on-wet and dry brushing techniques
Learn how to blend colours through washes to create atmosphere and mood

Watercolour Sketching & Composition

Develop effective compositions using the golden ratio

Complete Landscape Painting

Create a full landscape painting while applying learned techniques

Creating a Focal Point

Learn how to establish a centre of interest in your paintings

By the end of the course, students will have learned:

The proper use of watercolour materials
Techniques for washes, blending, and creating mood

What you'll get

A paper and pencil.

What to bring

Watercolour, brushes, colour plate, water pot, watercolour paper 300 gsm or sketch book. (if one bring sketch then no board or hard surface is required to bring).

Session repeats

This class series runs over 5 consecutive sessions, at the same time every week.

Suitable for

Suitable for adults, and kids (minimum 12 years old).

Adult accompaniment is not required.

Arafat Hosen

I am Arafat Hosen, an artist and educator with fourteen years of teaching experience. My passion lies in teaching, sharing skills and stories, and connecting with people from diverse backgrounds.

Plein air painting is one of my favorite practices, allowing me to explore the beauty of nature through watercolor. I see watercolor as a reflection of the mind—fluid, unpredictable, and ever-changing. Rather than controlling it, I embrace the experience, observing how colors blend and interact. Similarly, drawing is a fundamental part of my creative journey, where I find strength and expression.

Currently, I teach at Sydney Community College and WEA Sydney, offering fundamentals of drawing and watercolor painting courses for beginners and intermediate learners. I also conduct live demonstrations at various art communities across Australia.

In my classes, I encourage students to explore and experiment, helping them build confidence in their artistic skills. Whether you are a beginner or looking to refine your techniques, I am confident that you will enjoy my class and leave with a deeper understanding of watercolor and drawing.have been consistently high.
