Online Tufting classes with kits delivered
Rug tufting is surprisingly easier to learn than you think! Whether you're a complete beginner or someone with a bit of artistic experience, rug tufting offers a hands-on, fun and accessible way to bring your designs to life.
Suitable for all skill levels, you’ll learn how to use a handheld tufting gun to punch yarn and make your own tufted masterpiece. The process is simple and intuitive and most people pick it up quickly. With the right guidance, you can go from having no experience to creating your very own tufted rug in just a few hours. The best part? There's no need to be a skilled artist or have extensive crafting experience to get started.
Plus, we have a range of beginner-friendly classes right here in Perth! Our friendly and experienced teachers will help guide you step-by-step through the process and make rug tufting easy to learn. By the end of the class, you can take home your own tufted piece to display proudly in your room.
Tufting is a fun and hands-on process where yarn is pushed through a primary fabric to create textured designs. Think of tufting like painting but instead of a paintbrush, you’ll use a tufting gun to “paint” your canvas. As you pull the trigger, the tufting gun pushes loops of yarn through the fabric, forming small tufts that build the structure of your design.
To begin, you'll need to stretch your backing fabric—usually a material like monk’s cloth—over a wooden frame, creating a taut surface to work on. Once your fabric is secured and your design is ready, you load your yarn into the tufting gun and start tufting!
The beauty of tufting is in its simplicity. With just a few basic tools, you can turn plain yarn into something vibrant and textured. After completing your tufting, the next step is to secure the yarn by applying a layer of latex glue to the back of your piece. Once the glue dries, you can trim any excess yarn, tidy up your design and even add a backing fabric for durability. And just like that, you've crafted your own custom rug or textile!
If you're curious about tufting and want to learn in a fun, social setting, signing up for a tufting class in Perth is the perfect way to get started. Tufting classes provide a supportive environment where you can learn the craft from experienced instructors while enjoying the company of fellow beginners.
When you arrive at a tufting class, you’ll likely be greeted by friendly instructors who are passionate about sharing their knowledge with you all. If you have no previous experience, no problem! These tufting courses are designed for all skill levels, so beginners are more than welcome. Your teacher will typically start with an introduction to the tools and materials, including how to use the tufting gun and how to make tufts onto the primary fabric.
Next, they’ll set up your tufting station for you by drawing or tracing your design onto the fabric. Most tufting teachers will recommend you bring a simple design that you would like to create on your phone or feel free to get inspired by the variety of colourful inspirations right here in our Perth’s tufting studios.
Once your design is ready, it’s time to start tufting! The instructor will demonstrate how to hold and operate the tufting gun and then it’s your turn to give it a go. The feeling of guiding the tufting gun across the fabric and watching your design take shape is incredibly satisfying. As you work, the instructor will be on hand to offer tips, correct techniques and help with any challenges you might encounter.
By the end of the session, you’ll have created your very own tufted piece! Whether it’s a small rug, a wall hanging or a cushion cover, you’ll leave with a finished product and the skills to continue tufting on your own.
In 2024, tufting has emerged as one of the most popular crafts for everyone to enjoy and it’s not hard to see why! Firstly, tufting offers a creative outlet that’s both accessible and satisfying, even for beginners. Seeing your design take shape as you work makes it incredibly rewarding. In a world that often feels fast-paced and digital, tufting allows people to slow down and engage in a physical, meditative activity.
Another reason for tufting’s rise in popularity is its versatility. With tufting, you can create everything from rugs and pillows to wall hangings and furniture accents. This means there’s something for everyone, whether you’re looking to decorate your home, gift a handmade item or simply enjoy a creative hobby. The flexibility of the craft makes it appealing to both experienced crafters and those trying something new.
The rise of social media platforms like Instagram and TikTok has also played a role in rug tufting’s popularity. Videos of colourful tufting projects, satisfying rug-making time-lapses and creative DIY tutorials have inspired countless people to try tufting for themselves. The visual appeal of the process—and the beautiful finished products—have made tufting a viral hit.
So you see that in 2024, tufting continues to captivate people for its accessibility, versatility and sheer fun. It’s the perfect craft to explore whether you’re looking for a new hobby, a creative way to unwind or an opportunity to make something beautiful from scratch.
