The health benefits of superfood cocktail recipes

A healthy cocktail set up with fresh fruit and herbs

People are becoming more health-conscious than ever before. They’re drinking less alcohol and adopting habits that have a lower impact on the planet such as plant-based diets like veganism and vegetarianism. There are many reasons conscious cocktails have become a trend, but the main one comes down to the health benefits. Superfood cocktails comprise everything from the fresh and healthy ingredients they are made from, to the use of infused spirits, and even the fermentation process to create delicious cocktails filled with probiotics.

An infused spirit can often involve mixing alcohol with sugar, but the healthier options replace the sugar with natural fruit. One example of this is the Basil Grande which uses a black raspberry liqueur, basil, and black pepper. When you're at a cocktail class in Sydney, make sure to pay attention to the ingredients they're using and ask any questions about getting these at home! This tea infused vodka cocktail making class in Alexandria is a great introduction to the world of infused spirits.

The health benefits of using homemade natural infusions can include:

  • The use of all-natural ingredients will reduce your intake of artificial flavourings.

  • The increased amount of vitamins and nutrients.

  • All drinks are low in calories, low carb, and sugar.

  • Ingredients can be frozen (and blended!) and will not lose their nutrients.

Another conscious cocktail making trend is fermented cocktails like kombucha cocktails. There’s plenty of variations that can be made such as the Rosy-Gin Kombucha Cocktail that is made from unflavoured kombucha which gives the drink a tea-like taste. What’s great about using kombucha is you can make these drinks in the comfort of your kitchen at home, they'll give your mocktail a nice fizz, and fill your gut with good bacteria. Kombucha has been around for over 2000 years and is thought of by many as an incredible health elixir that is great for the liver and the digestive tract. So why not add it to your classic cocktails?

Superfood DIY cocktails also give you the chance to add some more nutrients into your diet as they make use of fresh fruits and vegetables. Most healthy cocktails contain superfoods that add that extra boost of vitamins and antioxidants. If you’re looking to avoid sugary alcoholic or non-alcoholic drinks, then a berry sangria may be the ideal drink for you.

If you want to make healthy cocktails at home, try using ingredients like green tea, avocado and frozen juices in cocktails such as the Vodka and Green Tea Cooler and Green Tea Martini. The ingredients in these beverages can decrease blood pressure and be found at your local supermarket or greengrocer. Other healthy ingredients include berries or almond milk which can do everything from increasing fibre intake to lowering cholesterol.

Make your own superfood DIY cocktails at home

The best thing about this healthy cocktail trend is that everyone can enjoy them! It doesn't matter if you're trying to lose weight or you can't drink alcohol for medical reasons, you can sip your mocktail entirely guilt-free and know that you'll feel excellent the next day. And if the classic cocktails are your favourite you can switch up the ingredients to make them healthier. Mai Tais can be made with drained beetroot and Margaritas can contain kale. And if you'd rather enjoy your healthy cocktail from your own home you can do that too. DIY superfood cocktails that can easily be made from your own kitchen include the Blueberry Mojito, Goji Berry Infused Vodka Martini, and the Greener Colada. The best part about learning to make cocktails at a cocktail class, is you pick up the skills and confidence to get more creative with cocktails at home.

Conscious cocktails are ideal for anyone who loves following cocktail trends. Any drink can be made healthy - it's all about getting creative with the ingredients, and there's no need to sacrifice your health to do it.
