Overlockers can be daunting machines, especially when you have to thread them from scratch for the first time. However once you’ve used one you’ll be converted! They give a professional finish and make for super speedy sewing especially when working with stretch fabrics.
Our Overlocker Basics workshop will start with the fundamentals of getting your machine up, running and ready to use.
Firstly, you’ll learn about the way the machine works, which will help you to understand how to recognise and diagnose issues with threading and tension. You will be taken through all the knobs and dials on your machine including stitch width, length and differential feed.
You will then learn a range of useful techniques that will introduce you to different ways of using this versatile machine for finishing, as well as joining seams and attaching bands. Time permitting, we will also show you how to adjust the machine to achieve a roll hem.
By the end of the class, return home with the samples you made and the confidence to practice your own sewing projects at home!
Knowledge required
No sewing knowledge is required however some familiarity with sewing using a regular machine is helpful. Open to adults and young adults (minimum age 13 years). Men and non-binary folk are encouraged to attend.

What you'll get
  • The know-how to confidently use an overlocker in their sewing practice.
  • Samples they have made using various techniques.
What to bring

Teaching sewing skills that will last a lifetime. Learn to sew and mend with knowledgable, patient teachers in a friendly, inclusive environment. All ages, genders and abilities welcome!
The School of Sewing & Upcycling began in 2015. We set up in a small shop in Buckley Street, Footscray and began to share our love of sewing with you. In 2019, we shifted to our current home right on the border of Footscray and Yarraville – a big, bright and welcoming space where many people come to hone their sewing skills.
In February 2023, Zoe took over the business from Gaye (who still teaches) and in May 2023 moved into new space in Whitehall Street, Footscray.
At SOSU, we believe that sewing is a wonderful life skill and we want to share it with you. Learning how to alter and mend the things that you have as well as learning the skills to create your own gorgeous garments will help you to be more creative and sustainable. We offer a wide range of full and half-day workshops or ongoing courses that will build, refresh or consolidate your sewing skills. We have a great mix of beginner and skilled sewers of all ages learning at our school. We can also arrange private lessons for those that learn better one-on-one. It’s just you and your teacher so that you can really get into that special project.
