Are you a history buff wanting to combine this interest with a fun craft? Join historical costume designer Dominique Outlaw and learn how to sew your own Needleminder based on historical patterns!
Dominique runs a historical supplies store for re-enactors and craftspeople using materials like natural fabrics and natural dyes with fully customizable costume kits.
Under her guidance, you will learn how to hand sew your Needleminder using 10 different heritage stitching styles from the 12th century to the 19th century. You will be able to choose your fabric and thread colour and will be provided with a historical sewing kit to go into your needleminder and to use throughout the workshop. The kit includes 100% linen, wool, and silk threads naturally dyed using historical techniques, embroidery scissors, and bobbins for your threads, as well as beeswax and an assortment of other necessary tools.
During the workshop, you will cut out your pattern pieces, pick your fabric and thread colours, and learn a few different historical sewing techniques. You will complete the class with a fully stocked and functional needleminder.
Light lunch and drinks will be provided, such as a sandwich platter or wrap platter catered by the cafe around the corner, as well as fresh fruit salads. Please send through any dietary requirements or requests. Customized lunches and additions, such as cakes for private bookings, can be organised as well.
This workshop is open to all sewing abilities as the techniques used in this class are beginner-appropriate. However, if your hand is a lot smaller or larger than an average hand, send through a message and we can custom-make a pattern that will fit you.
