Looking for unique things to do in Melbourne? Join our basket coiling workshop at the Raffia Connection!
Basket coiling is an ancient craft and Navajo Stitch is no exception. The Navajo tribe of native Americans live in the regions of Colorado, Utah, Arizona and New Mexico and traditionally made these baskets as wedding gifts, with complex symbolism linking to the patterns.
In this two hour workshop, we'll be taking a simpler approach, using two contrasting raffia colours to make a basic pattern. All materials are included in the workshop, including hand-dyed raffia, a needle and a starter coil, along with a video sent after the class, which can help you make more trinket baskets or coasters at home.
Our workshops are informal and fun and facilitated by Janet, Creative Director at The Raffia Connection in Box Hill North, who is eager to share the art of basket coiling with you all.
