Looking for fun things to do in Melbourne? Join award-winning artist Jaq Grantford for a portrait painting masterclass.
All levels of artistic ability are welcome. Explore your portrait painting skills in a safe, non-judgemental environment.
Jaq will demonstrate her process of working from a photo to create a portrait. You will look at blocking in the form and capturing a likeness, modelling, tone, and colour.
Bring a photo of a loved one or someone you would love to paint. And if you don’t have anything, Jaq can provide some fantastic reference material so that you can create a beautiful work of art. But if you can provide your own reference, it’s an excellent opportunity to create a special portrait of someone you love.
You will learn:
  • Starting with a tonal ground
  • What to keep and take out of the photo reference, so it’s your own art
  • Blocking in the portrait
  • Colour mixing
  • Effective techniques
  • Ensuring you have the likeness and essence of the person
  • Tying everything together
  • Varnish options
Basic materials are provided, and you are also welcome to supplement with your own if you like. (We can chat about this prior to the workshop!)
Snacks will be provided for morning tea, and there’s a lovely cafe at Gasworks where you can purchase lunch during the lunch break.
By the end of the class, you can take your artworks home, which you can keep for yourself or gift to a friend!
