Participants in the Pearl Threading Workshop are introduced to:
  • the skill of tying knots between pearls and beads
  • stringing necklaces
  • the materials that can be used for pearl threading
  • the fittings for necklaces such as clasps, thread, needles, and gimp.
Why are knots important?
Knots secure the pearls. If a strand of pearls (or any beads) breaks, knots keep most of the pearls/beads attached to the strand, preventing them from falling off and rolling around on the floor.
Knots prevent rubbing. Pearls are soft and require care. Knots between the pearls prevent them from rubbing together. This avoids scratches, abrasions, and extensive wear on pearls over time.
Pearls and beads should be restrung on a regular basis as the thread will eventually accumulate contamination, for example hard dust particles, which will rub on the pearls and cause scratches and abrasion.
There is no assessment or formal qualifications attached to this short course. The course will proceed subject to a minimum number of applicants.

The Gemmological Association of Australia is a not for profit association that teaches people from all walks of life the skills to handle gemstones.
Established in 1945, we are the only organisation in Australia that teaches gemstone identification. Our graduates are employed throughout the jewellery industry, and are trained to identify not only the species of gemstone, but also to conclusively separate natural from synthetic gemstones and to recognise when there are treatments applied to the gemstones.
Our teachers are passionate about gemstones and generously share their knowledge for the next generation.
You don't need to be a jeweller to learn about gemstones, you just need a fascination with these unique treasures and want to learn more about them.
You will learn about rare gemstones, and how to handle them like a pro. Learn about the fascinating internal world of gemstones and what they look like under magnification.
