Oil Painting
This is a full-day class where you will learn how to paint an outback sunset sky.
During this session, we will be painting a small painting of the western sky (where the sun sets) with beautiful subtle transitions of colour.
We will start the session with an introduction to the colour wheel and colour theory followed by an introduction to tonal values. These principles will then help us understand how to paint our sky paintings.
This class is good for beginners and anyone who wants to experiment with using oil paints. You will have a brief introduction to oil painting and the materials that we will be using. We will also talk about landscape painting and the approach.
You do not need to buy any materials as I will be providing them (all materials included).
Halfway through, we will have a 20-minute break. Lunch is not included.
What you will learn:
  • How to understand colour: new concepts of the colour theory and mixing and its application in the landscape
  • Observing and painting water reflections in oils, composition and creating depth using colour, tone, and perspective
  • Using underpainting and layering of paint while blending colours to create beautiful colours
What to wear:
There is a chance that you stain your clothes, so wear clothes that you do not mind if you stain them.

Chris is an artist who lives and works in Sydney, Australia. At the age of six, Chris developed an interest in drawing and at the age of 13, he attended the School of Arts at Palazzo de La Salle in Valletta, Malta.
Vidal's style of work was developed through years of experience in drawing and painting. He considers himself as a contemporary realist with his preferred subject being the landscape. Studying classical arts mainly drawing from life helped him to develop drawing skills and a keen eye for detail. During his studies, he was influenced by the works of the great masters. He is also influenced by the American landscape painters of the Hudson River School and by the Australian impressionists of the Heidelberg movement.
Chris is also a tutor and teaches drawing and painting to adults at various locations around Sydney. He emphasises the importance of drawing as the foundation onto which you can build up a solid skill in painting as you progress.
Having a solid background in science he gives importance to the quality of materials used to create artwork as well as to the importance of understanding why to use a particular technique in the painting process.
Ultimately the aim of the teaching classes is to guide you and help you develop a skill in a way that you will be able to draw and paint without any assistance and to also be your own critique.
