Looking for unique things to do in Sydney? Join Catherine Kelly in Rozelle for this hands-on millinery course and learn how to make a unique hat or headpiece using felt or straw!
Led by Catherine from Embellish Atelier, you'll learn hat making using traditional techniques and discover how to make your hat design stand out from the crowd.
Course outline:
  • Introduction to millinery and its materials, tools and equipment.
  • What style suits me?
  • Design elements and principles for hats and headwear.
  • Choosing the right hat blocks for your hat project.
  • Learn some traditional trim techniques for millinery and hat making.
  • Making a hat or headpiece from felt or straw using traditional techniques.
  • Feather shaping for trims.
  • Working with silk flower making tools.
  • Grosgrain binds and trims and crinoline trims.
  • Keep it on your head – tips, tricks, and techniques to secure your hat.
  • How to store and care for your hat.
You will also be given the opportunity to tour Embellish Atelier and Hatters Millinery Supplies and experience a working millinery studio!
At the end of the course, return home with your straw hat or felt capeline as well as the confidence to continue creating your own DIY projects.
Note: Please refer to the 'what to bring' section for a full list of materials needed for the course. All students must be over 18+ years of age.

What to bring
Please wear closed-in shoes.
Your teacher will supply equipment and materials for the first class and will outline and display the correct equipment, and tools required for millinery. A basic sewing kit can be purchased on the first evening and includes:
  • Tape measure.
  • Sewing gauge.
  • A packet of mixed size straw needles (Birch preferred).
  • Floral pins.
  • Beeswax thread conditioner.
Additional materials required throughout the class:
  • Mapping/drawing pins.
  • Quality dressmaking steel pins.
  • Apron.
  • Thread to match project – Gutermann preferred.
  • Hat box.
  • General purpose scissors.
  • Long-nosed pliers.
  • Thimble.
Session repeats

This class series runs over 4 consecutive sessions, at the same time every week.
