2 x 1.5 hours Class size 8 to 15 guests     $45

Cut and paste some creativity into your daily routine with this two-day collage workshop with artist Aaron McGarry! Aaron's online collage club is a great place to feel inspired and confident as you create some seriously cool collage art.
Total beginners are welcome, from teens to seniors and all the materials you'll need are likely already lying around your house. If you're looking for fun and mindful indoor activities to get you through lockdown then this online class is for you.
Over two days, you'll learn more about the history of collage artists and practice making your own collages, step-by-step, using some of their techniques. Over the rest of the hour and a half workshop, Aaron will be there to help guide you, answer any questions and give practical tips and tricks in making collage art.
Day one:
The Enlightenment period look's at Artist Mary Delaney a 72-year-old paper flower collage creator from the 1700s, definitely the Grandma-ma to the modern-day collage arts and you'll be making your own collage flower, too!
Day two:
Let's dive headfirst into Cubism and the creation of collage in the modern era with an emphasis on Picasso and Braque in the early 1900s. You will create your own cubist style collage with texture, colour and composition being the focus.
After each class, Aaron encourages you to email your work for display at the beginning of the next class on the Zoom share screen (only if you choose to). Sharing your work with others offers more encouragement during the class and sometimes inspiration too!
There are only two rules of collage club:
1. We only talk about what we like in someone's work, as most are making collage art for the first time. This is a creative safe space!
2. Nothing is ever wrong with making art... and you only get better by giving it a go!

Knowledge required
Absolute beginners welcome! If you can cut it and glue it, you'll be able to do it!

What to bring
  • You’ll be sourcing your own materials from around the house; glue stick or glue paste (even wood glue will work if that's all you got - or clear sticky tape!) and a pair of scissors or scalpel.
  • Cereal boxes, old magazines even the local newspaper. Maybe consider if there is an image-based book you no longer want, you can recycle it through your creativity!
  • Pencil/pens/markers/paint/blue tack/etc. are all handy to have around if you feel the need to use them.

During the 2020 pandemic outbreak, I had the privilege to share my creative skills from over 15 years of being a professional practising artist. Through the Inner West City Council in Sydney, a program was set up to combat isolation called 'Get Connected Stay Connected'.
Moving into teaching art to people online from all walks of life, I found so much joy in showing others the creative world of Collage Art. My artistic career began in collage at the age of 15 in high school, since then I have studied Fine Art at National Art School majoring in Sculpture, received several awards for my artworks across sculpture, video and photography and have even had my work shown at the National Portrait Gallery in Canberra.
Collage is something you can do in your own home, with no prior art experience necessary. Watching people over the course of eight classes improved each week showed me anyone can create amazing collage artworks with some tutelage and I'd be happy to show you how.
