A hands-on and fun workshop on how to forge a unique kitchen knife in our well kitted out studio. We are located in the heart of Melbourne and we are all about quality! That's why we only use
high carbon steel for our blades, they are superior to mild steel blades because they are strong, long lasting and hold a sharp edge.
This workshop is suitable for absolute beginners but some physical output will be required.
Classes are led by an experienced knifemaker and students will be guided safely in forging and shaping a high carbon steel blade with tang, hardening and sharpening of the blade, shaping a blackwood handle and inserting and fixing the tang into the handle.
The end product will be a quality knife ready to be put to good use in your kitchen!
The studio has 10 fully equipped forging stations and a dedicated grinding room with state of the art belt grinders and paper wheel sharpener to add that lovely sharp edge to your blades.
Participants need to be 18 or over.
If after your session, you find yourself wanting to extend your skills, you may want to explore our
other workshops we have on offer. We offer classes in steel sculpture and jewellery, enamelling, knifemaking and for those wanting to get a more in depth understanding of the art of blacksmithing, we also offer multi-day courses.

Steve offers a rare mix of passion, effervescent energy and a love of people, resulting in memorably experiences where everyone feels welcome...
And then... there is Harry, the resident forge hound with an equally sunny disposition who will greet you at the door with a big smile and wet nose!
Steve discovered the colourful world of blacksmithing in Belgium, during a midlife sabbatical. Upon return, with two big anvils and a legvice under his belt, he set up a forge in Footscray's picturesque Water's Edge Arts Precinct.
In 2013, he initiated Australia's first Blacksmiths Festival, now being held biannually on the banks of the Maribyrnong River and run by a team of volunteers.
Steve has a degree in Earth Sciences, studied blacksmithing at the Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp, obtained a Certificate IV in Training and Assessment and is currently completing a Certificate in Industrial Blacksmithing at TAFENSW.
Apart from teaching, he also offers a well equipped space for members to come together and forge.
