Furoshiki is a Japanese traditional square cloth that has been used to wrap, carry, gift, and decorate. The name is originally from the Edo period referring to the word 'bath spread', when people used the cloth to wrap their clothes while they were in the bathhouse so that their clothes did not get mixed up with others'.
Come and learn about alternative gift wrapping techniques. Led by Japanese sewer and designer Maoko Carroll, this workshop is for anyone wanting to be more sustainable. Whether it's wrapping gifts for Christmas, birthdays or special occasions or creating a carryall to collect fruit and veg from your local market, this is the workshop for you!
Maoko will share some traditional techniques along with her own personal story of Furoshiki with you. She will take you through the processes of creating two Furoshiki cloths by hand and will show you how versatile and useful this simple square can be.
You will also learn the art of paper wrapping as well! As Maoko says: "We have a different way of wrapping in Japan, that I believe is rooted from the cloth wrapping and will be helpful when wrapping with the Furoshiki cloth. It's important to sit and take time when wrapping gifts, it quiets the mind and by using the Furoshiki you are able to keep reusing it."
By the end of the session, you will go home with a Japanese made Furoshiki cloth and maybe become a master of cloth wrapping!
