This course is designed to give you an introduction to the wonderful craft of upholstery.
Create a stylish cushioned footstool and in doing so learn the fundamentals of upholstery, its tools and materials. The hardwood timber legs have been especially made in house with reclaimed timber from the Among the Trees workshop.
You not only will learn how to source upholstery materials second hand, but by the end of the course you will have the skills and confidence to take on upholstery projects at home.
This course is open to students 13 and older. Among The Trees accepts students under 18 in two groups:
  • Students 13-15 years of age must attend all courses with a parent or guardian. This parent or guardian must also purchase a place in the course and take part. One parent/guardian is able to attend with multiple students.
  • Students 16-17 years of age may attend a course without a parent or guardian present.
You can read our full Child Safe Policy on the booking page.

Please note: Public dates for this class require at least 5 guests to run. In the unlikely event that we don't reach this number, we'll cancel the class; in this case we'll inform you and allow you to get a refund or reschedule, so please watch your email/SMS one day prior to the class.
Knowledge required
Beginner-friendly. This workshop is for people with little to no experience with upholstery looking for an introduction to the craft. The course is run using predominantly hand tools so you need to be aware that there is an element of physicality involved and most of the work is carried out standing up.
We aim to make the courses as inclusive and accessible as possible, people living with a disability should notify ClassBento so that the appropriate accommodations can be made.
What you'll get
By the end of this upholstery course, you will have:
  • An appreciation of second-hand materials and where to find them
  • An understanding of the hand tools used in upholstery
  • Knowledge of fundamental upholstery techniques
  • The confidence to take on your own upholstery projects at home
  • A custom-made upholstered ottoman to take home
This course is taught using predominantly second-hand materials. You will be taught to use a variety of upholstery tools and materials including:
  • Staple guns, upholstery tacks and hammers, pliers and webbing stretchers
  • Scissors, knives and needles
  • Jute webbing, upholstery foam and dacron
  • Buttons, decorative studs and gimp
What to bring
A selection of fabric will be available to students at the class at a cost of $10 (please bring cash on the day).
Alternatively, students may supply their own fabric as per the following specifications:
  • Be of a medium-weight such as cotton drill, cotton duck, bark cloth or soft furnishing fabric. Heavy-weight commercial upholstery fabric, thick denim or lightweight cotton such as quilting cotton are all unsuitable.
  • You'll need a single piece of fabric 75cm x 60cm (or larger). No hemming on this piece is required.

Among the Trees is an ethical and sustainability based start-up for reclaimed timber located in Marrickville.
Saving timber from demolitions or other discarded uses and making it available to the public through a retail timber shop and woodworking classes. Accessibility to wood doesn't just mean being wheelchair friendly (which we are), it also means helping customers understand how to use and source reclaimed timber. To make it as easy as possible to work with, we offer custom machining and glueing, so the timber in our store can be squared, resurfaced and cut to specific dimensions. We also help empower individuals to have the confidence to undertake woodworking projects by offering woodworking beginners classes that are taught with simple hand tools.

Lumberyards and wood workshops can be intimidating sometimes, ATT is one of the few places that caters not only to architects, planners, homeowners as well as carpenters and tradespeople but also to customers that have little to no woodworking experience and are embarking on DIY and student projects or trying their hand at repair, renovating or building.
Our workshop at Among The Trees is set up to be the perfect space to learn about hand tools, reclaimed timber, and woodworking. We’ve been hard at work collecting, restoring and tuning all the tools required to learn woodworking, and a few extra ones as well.

All-in-all, everyone that is interested in wood is welcome!
