Learn Ikebana, the art of Japanese flower arrangement, at these fun and relaxing Sydney workshops. You will make three different stunning arrangements and leave with your flowers and branches.

This class is great for beginners, as you will learn authentic Ohara School Ikebana techniques, which is unique for its emphasis on seasonal qualities, natural growth processes and the beauty of natural environments.
Your qualified Ohara Ikebana teacher will customise each class to suit the season, but the hands-on agenda is roughly as follows:
  • Introduction to Ikebana
  • Explanation and demonstration of basic style and traditional style of arrangements
  • Learning the correct way to trim branches, stems, leaves
  • Bending of branches
  • Selecting flowers, branches, and stems for a particular arrangement
  • Identify the correct vase or base that can be used with a particular arrangement
  • Using the Kenzan
  • Learning how to keep arrangements fresh for as long as possible
  • Blending Ikebana to your surroundings or making it a focal point
  • Identifying focal points of your arrangement and positioning it
By the end of the class, you will have made three different flower arrangements and will have learned all the skills of the Japanese art of flower arranging.

The course fee includes a materials pack valued at $60. You will be able to take home your flowers and branches.

Kuniko Nakano has been teaching Ohara School of Ikebana for over 15 years in Sydney.

This includes private lessons and group lessons at Sydney Chapter of Ohara School.
She has been teaching at Sydney Community College since 2006.

She has been a committee member of the Ikebana International Sydney for the last 20 years.

Currently, she is the president of the Ohara School of Ikebana Sydney and
she also holds Ohara School of Ikebana Associate First Master Degree.

Her Ikebana involvement is not only with teaching.

She also holds demonstrations at numerous events and functions, such as Auburn Cherry Blossom
Festival and Cowra Japanese Garden Festival. At these events, she introduces Japanese traditional arrangements and also talks about Ikebana history and philosophy.

In 2016, she received an award from the Japanese Government, Consul General for strengthening and promoting the Japanese – Australian relationship as well as promoting multiculturalism in Sydney and New South Wales.

Her Ikebana teaching style has the following characteristics :

  • Easy to understand and to put it in practice;

practical;

  • Emphasize the importance of the basic form;
  • How beauty is communicated differently in Ikebana compared to Western flower arrangements;
  • How to incorporate the subtle lines of plants in Ikebana;

She takes great pride hearing her students enjoy her classes.

Many find her classes calming and meditative, too.
