What you'll do
In this fun embroidery class, we will be diving straight into the world of thread and colour as you learn an ancient skill that you can use to update or create something new.Learn how to express yourself using needles and thread. Humans have used this ancient art form for millennia - and now you can use it too.We'll begin the class with some basic colour theory and explore the different types of stitches. During the course, you will learn the basic stitches you need to use in various ways, e.g. Sashiko, Boro, painting with thread, and many more!This session is a hands-on experience, and your teacher Narda will be there to help and answer any questions you might have.You will go home with your hand-stitched piece plus skills to embellish your clothes, homewares, and more. You will also have access to Narda's textile and design library.This short workshop is also great for those doing textiles for their HSC and who want to explore design options.You can request a personal class at no extra cost. You or your group (max 4) will be the only people in the class, so you will have all my attention.Join the worldwide Slow Stitch Movement.

No prior knowledge needed. This is a workshop for absolute beginners.

As a teacher with 30 years experience, I get a real buzz when a student who hasn't tried a specific craft before - not only masters it, but becomes excited by the ways they can use their new skill.I started in Jewellery design when I was in my early 20's, then discovered that all the things I love to do (design, dye, draw, felt, paint, etc) could be used in the practice of 'Hand or Surface Embroidery'.I taught the 'Foundation course' in Colour & Design at the International School of Colour & Design. I am a published textile designer & also run week-long textile experiences in Tasmania every January.I have exhibited many of my pieces in a variety of spaces & had one piece auctioned off to raise money for the Embroiderers Guild of NSW.My influences come from various parts of history both ancient and modern, the natural world (especially birds & fish) & the written word.I love to read.I collect folktales & poetry.These interests often show up in my work - in quotes or images inspired by what I've read. I bring all of these experiences & interests to my teaching of Hand Embroidery & encourage students to explore the potential of this ancient art form.The same can be said of my other design practices - wirework, up-cycling clothing & free form crochet + knitting.I also teach spinning - I dye & spin my own yarn.Please let me know if there is anything I can help you with.
