Have you ever wondered what it takes to differentiate a valuable gemstone from a mere piece of glass? Join our unique workshop in our state-of-the-art laboratory located in West Melbourne and gain valuable insight into how to professionally examine gemstones.
Led by experienced gemologists, this half-day class offers a unique opportunity to handle a variety of gemstone materials and learn some tips on what professionals look for when identifying a stone.
Using a 10x loupe, a magnifying glass specifically designed for gemstone inspection, you will gain hands-on experience in viewing the intricate details and features of each stone. With expert guidance, you'll learn how to hold the gemstones with tweezers as you look at a range of natural and synthetic gemstones including sapphire, diamond, moissanite, and glass in addition to many more.
The workshop will be conducted in a friendly and supportive environment, allowing you to ask questions and seek expert advice. As you immerse yourself in this experience, you may find yourself feeling a sense of wonder and excitement, uncovering the hidden beauty within these precious stones.

The Gemmological Association of Australia is a not for profit association that teaches people from all walks of life the skills to handle gemstones.
Established in 1945, we are the only organisation in Australia that teaches gemstone identification. Our graduates are employed throughout the jewellery industry, and are trained to identify not only the species of gemstone, but also to conclusively separate natural from synthetic gemstones and to recognise when there are treatments applied to the gemstones.
Our teachers are passionate about gemstones and generously share their knowledge for the next generation.
You don't need to be a jeweller to learn about gemstones, you just need a fascination with these unique treasures and want to learn more about them.
You will learn about rare gemstones, and how to handle them like a pro. Learn about the fascinating internal world of gemstones and what they look like under magnification.
