8 to 18 years     2 hours Class size 1 to 6 guests

$75 (Afterpay available)
In this fun and educational workshop, your kids will learn how to create an adorable and nutritious bento box inspired by Japanese anime characters and foods. Led by Sumi Saikawa, a Japanese-born nutritionist and cooking instructor based in Sydney, this hands-on class will guide kids in putting together a fun and delicious meal that looks as good as it tastes. Please note that this class focuses primarily on assembling the bento, rather than cooking.
Don't worry if your child is new to bento making - Sumi's warm guidance will make the experience enjoyable and accessible for everyone.
Throughout the two and a half-hour workshop, you will prepare a variety of components for your bento box, including:
  • Pikachu tomato rice
  • Flower-shaped ham
  • Crispy chicken karaage
  • Heart-shaped egg roll
  • Teriyaki-flavoured sautéed carrots
  • Fresh vegetables
Besides getting to unleash their creativity in crafting these cute and tasty dishes, they'll also get to enjoy the final bento box for lunch.
Please note:
  • The parent/guardian is not required to stay but is welcome to stay and participate together free of charge.

Sumi Saikawa

I was born in a Zen temple in Kobe Japan, which was an amazing environment to grow up in as a little kid. I was always in the kitchen to help make shojin ryori with mum (Temple cooking) for as long as I can remember for the temple. This was where my curiosity and fascination of food came from especially its part to play in culture and role it plays to keep the body and mind healthy.
From there, I graduated from university and worked as a dietitian in Japan for many years before meeting my husband and coming to Australia. My husband and I immigrated to Australia over 27 years ago now where we have made ourselves a family with 2 (not so young anymore) children. Now, I run lots of health oriented - cooking classes including "shojin ryori" for people living in Australia and Japan from all stages of life from the elderly to children.
My meal style: I try to give to initiative to prepare the foods even in a busy life. I appreciate the foods and I try to make food which will make me be happy.
