Looking for unique things to do in Kawarren/Gellibrand, or want to take your painting skills to the next level? Learn how to paint with encaustic wax and create a stunning artwork!
Encaustic painting is a historical technique, where the wax is heated up and painted with. Encaustic paint is a combination of beeswax, pigment and a small amount of hardener (either dammar resin or carnauba wax).
Deb will help you work with the wax and the best tips on embedding images or small objects on the surface.
The wax paint is solid at room temperature so you will melt it before it can be applied. Once it cools and hardens, and a heat tool is used to ensure that each layer is fused to the last, this makes it a very tactile working experience.
This class will cover:
  • Introduction to the tools, resources and history of encaustic wax
  • Working in a safe environment (heat, ventilation)
  • Preparing your panel for painting (work on MDF and birch ply panels)
  • Layering and fusing the wax
  • Mark making, creating texture and embedding images
  • Embedding small objects in wax
  • Using stencils
  • Finishing your panel ready for hanging
  • Caring for encaustic paintings
Depending on your goals and vision, your teacher will assist in technical aspects of the process, including colour theory and paint mixing, and work with you on image and composition. If you just want to experiment, you are welcome to!
Encaustic is wax so it hardens at room temperature. This means your work will be ready to travel when you are. No wet paint messes!
The fun of encaustic is that you can get marvellous special effects just by melting the colourful wax paint. It can be as simple or as detailed as you choose.
At the end of the class, you can take home your encaustic painting to hang proudly on the wall!

Knowledge required
Beginner friendly - No experience in art, craft or encaustics is required for this workshop. Everything will be covered, and you will be walked through creating your own piece of unique art. Experienced/practicing artists are encouraged to incorporate their own artwork into the encaustic process.

What you'll get
  • Tea, coffee, full cream milk and sugar will be provided
  • All equipment, tools, substrates and mixed media components provided
  • Your experimental pieces and your final 8x10 inch encaustic painting to take home

Deb Gartland is a self-taught traditional and contemporary fine art photographer, who goes around with a head full of high falutin’ ideas!
In 2019 Deb won the inaugural (acquisitive) Conceptual Photography Award - with a photo encaustic and mixed media piece. She won both overall winner and best entry by an Australian Photographic Society member.
Inspiration for Deb comes from the world around her, and she is particularly drawn to beaches, cliffs and the ocean. She thrives on the colours, textures and patterns in her life.
Grandiose images and worlds fill Deb's nightmares and dreamscapes, and she likes to create visually confronting images with her photography. She is not a purist, and from very early in her career has been pushing herself to break the rules and challenge boundaries.
As an encaustic (hot wax painting!) artist, Deb incorporates her photography, mixed media and sculptural components in her encaustic paintings - thus creating pieces that are unique, textural and highly tactile. Having attended an encaustic workshop around 2017, Deb has never looked back from working with this medium.
Deb's encaustic workshops require no experience and she runs them regularly as an intimate day with between one and four participants. Her encaustic workshops are popular with novice and experienced artists alike.
