Join Emily in an all-day Botanical Still Life Workshop in the heart of the Macedon Ranges. This is not a paint-and-sip type workshop; you will be learning the technical skills of sketching and composing an acrylic painting, including how to mix colours and layer them together with different brush techniques to achieve depth and movement so your painting doesn’t fall flat or look cartoonish.
You will start the day learning how to prime your painting surface and the importance of the base colour you choose. You will learn about basic composition and sketching techniques to produce some sketches of draft compositions and discuss them as a class and individually.
Emily will introduce the class to colour theory and how to use contrasting and complementary colours throughout your artwork to make the colours work together and not be jarring, fake-looking, or simply turn to mud! As you sketch your design onto the board, you will also look at how to break down the complex shapes into manageable forms and how to use shadows and negative space to make your painting look more realistic.
After a delicious locally sourced organic lunch and a coffee to lift you up, Emily will continue to guide you through mixing mid-tones and reinforce using warm and cool colours to define shapes and draw the eye through your painting. As beginners, Emily knows you will make mistakes and will show you the tricks to make your mistakes disappear without throwing out hours of work!
Finally, you will be shown how to make complex shapes like petals look realistic with expressive forms, how to add highlights without desaturation, define the foreground of your painting, and create directional lines and open shapes to avoid the cartoonish look.
Throughout the day, you will have plenty of time for working on your individual painting with lots of feedback and assistance from Emily, in these intimate classes of no more than 10 students. Everyone will be able to complete their paintings ready to hang on their walls with pride by the end of the day, as well as all the knowledge and skills to replicate it at home and grow their skills as a painter with the fundamentals of Botanical Still Life under your belt!
