Using the ancient method of lost wax casting, in this two-part course, you will learn to carve wax rings, embellish them and have them cast as well as master finishing and polishing techniques.
The aim of this course is for you to come away with at least one finished ring, and either a finished second ring or one that you can finish at home.
Over two sessions, everyone will make the same style ring. This is to make sure you all pick up the same skills and finish off at least one piece. With no more than 10 students per class, you will receive plenty of group and one-to-one guidance throughout the course.
Unlike other classes, where they will finish your work off for you, you will learn these valuable skills here yourself so that you can repeat the process at home.
Once complete, you can book into part two of this course, where you will concentrate on your own designs and creations using all available waxes.
Knowledge required
No prior skills are required, just bring your enthusiasm! You need to be over sixteen (16) to attend this class, have good eyesight, or bring glasses with you and have fairly steady hands.

What you'll get
  • A finished ring to take home (maybe two!)
  • Eran Naylor Jewellery will provide all materials needed, as well as a list of where you can purchase this equipment for home use.
You will take your pieces to an external casting house yourself to see how it works and build relationships (though we can also take it for you). You will need to pay for all castings plus GST. We only cast in sterling silver on this course to keep your costs down.
What to bring
An apron, any glasses needed, hair ties and a mask for filing metal.

I am Eran Naylor and I am an Australian goldsmith and designer, originally from England. I began making jewellery about 25 years ago and simply never stopped. I was hooked and even today I find it hard to stop. I am mainly self-taught from a desire to create. I design and hand-make my collections from my workshops in Melbourne. I also teach classes at Gasworks Arts Park in Albert Park, have an online jewellery school and also teach by private tuition and Zoom.
Wax work is more my specialty and that is mainly what I teach. I love teaching, it keeps me surrounded by creative thinkers and that in itself gives back to me as much as I help others. So it’s a win-win situation that keeps the creative spirit alive!
My inspirations for my collections come first and foremost from designs and patterns from the old Mesopotamian regions, India and South America. In my late twenties, I became fascinated by Egyptology and that is where my love of adornment really flourished. I like to try to transfer the beauty of older times to bold, classic pieces that can be worn or used with ease today. I try to embody in my work the beauty and calm that adorns the wearer and has a bohemian feel and look about it, recreating feeling and senses into real pieces that can be worn like talismans every day.
Using materials, and colours and often experimenting with new techniques I try to create pieces that make the senses flow.
