Beekeeping Class

Get intimate with thousands of bees at an apiary tour and beehive inspection

2 hours

Class size 1 to 10 (public classes), 2 to 12

$80 - $120 (Afterpay available)
($80 per Child (10 - 18 years old), $120 per Adult)

If you have a passion for bees, join Henry at his apiary to learn about European honey bees. We will start with an overview about how bees live, breed, and how they often move into the walls of homes. Then we will open several hives to see first-hand how they build their combs and store their nectar/honey/pollen. We will find the queen and spot her eggs. We will see larvae of different ages and usually see bees hatching out of their cocoons. We will also taste different batches of honey from local hives.
This class is great for anybody considering getting their own hive or for those who simply want to learn about bees first-hand and up-close.
You will be provided with a full-coverage beekeeping suit, but it is still possible (though very rare) to get stung. You should not join this class if you have ever had an anaphylactic reaction to bee stings.
The class is usually at Henry's apiary in Neutral Bay. Some listings may be for the apiary in Huntleys Cove.
$120 for Adults, $80 for children up to 18 years old
(Select Ticket Type at checkout, you will need to do a separate booking for adults and for children.)
Bad Weather: The class will proceed if there is intermittent light drizzle. If it is raining, you will be able to reschedule to another date. Henry will usually create new class dates if there are no available classes in the near term.
If the general outdoor temperature is below 18-degrees, the hive inspections may be brief and we will use a glass-fronted observation-hive for longer viewing.
About Henry:
Henry collects bee swarms in the spring, removes bees from homes year-round, has done bee presentations to local schools, is contracted with NSW Land Services for management of feral bees, and has assisted with the NSW Department of Primary Industries response to the Varroa Mite infestation. He has a wealth of knowledge and crazy stories to share!
