Did you know that Ceylon Cinnamon cannot be called Ceylon Cinnamon unless it comes from Sri Lanka? Did you also know that after saffron, cardamom is the most expensive spice in the world? What about that nutmeg has been at the heart of much war and turmoil in Indonesia from colonising countries trying to take over its harvesting?
From the legends who have brought you the most revered and engaging Art of Chai workshop with 50+ 5-star reviews, we are now launching a spice series. This has come about from feedback from students who want a workshop dedicated to understanding spices individually to help them integrate spices into their diet and lifestyle.
This workshop will dive into:
  • What are herbs and spices
  • What is Ayurveda
  • What spices are the most important spices for Indian food and beverages
  • What are the energies and properties of these individual spices
  • How are these spices harvested and why are some of them so rare and expensive
  • How to practically use spices as part of your diet and lifestyle
  • Why is it important to integrate natural and whole spices into your life
This workshop is perfect for anyone wanting to gain a deeper understanding of spices and how to use them. This workshop is also great for those who cook with spices but want to learn more about what each individual spice's Ayurvedic properties are so you can use them in a more strategic and informed manner.
You will get to explore these spices in a sensory manner where you will smell and taste different spices. You will also get to go home with a kit of your spices to test out your newfound skills and recipes developed by Uppma Virdi, the granddaughter of an Ayurvedic doctor from India.
When these workshops are held at our studios in Kilsyth, there is an option to join the group for lunch afterward at Saravana Bhavan in Wantirna. If you would like to join, please select this as an add-on.
Please note that the knowledge that is taught in this workshop comes from sacred cultural practices and rituals that have been passed down generations. I share this knowledge to help people appreciate and understand the 7, 000+ year-old system of Ayurveda. The information shared in these workshops is not to be monetised or shared by students for their financial benefit. The wellness industry is sadly filled with cultural appropriation so we at Chai Walli are trying to decolonise this industry.

Uppma is the granddaughter of an Ayurvedic doctor who specialised in herbs and spices. She is a first generation Indian Australian migrant who left her career as a lawyer to follow her passion to share her ancient family recipes with the world.
Frustrated with the lack of authenticity, she started Chai Walli to educate people on the genuine beauty of Indian teas and spices that her grandfather gifted her with.
Uppma grew up with her mother’s love of cooking ingrained in her veins. She uses her innate senses to balance spices according to their Ayurvedic elements and teach others the Art of Chai.
Leading a team of passionate individuals, Uppma runs her small Australian business with deep values. All the blends are formulated and created by Uppma using her love of natural wholesome ingredients and family recipes.
We are grateful that we can share our ritual of chai and our art of creating beautiful blends with you. Thank you for choosing to support artisan makers like us. Your love for quality handcrafted products means that we get to share cultural heritage and age old techniques in a modern light with you and many others.
We care deeply about the suppliers we work with. We choose to have a tea farm to tea cup policy, which allows us to support some truly amazing tea estates in India producing organic and fair trade teas.
Our humble beginnings started with Uppma blending spices in her parent’s basement recreating her grandfather’s blends. Today, we are proud to have several award winning and well renowned masala chai and spice blends which are experienced by our amazing customers all around the world.
So come, join Uppma, Australia's leading educator in all things flavour, spice and tea.
