Looking for unique things to do in the Macedon Ranges? Learn the basics of printmaking in this full-day workshop.
During this class, you will learn how to design, carve and edition your own lino prints and leave with your own prints, blocks, and tools, as well as the skills to continue your practice at home!
In the morning, you will be guided through carving a tester block from our designs so you can learn how to use the tools to make different effects and textures and how the lino responds. You will be shown how you can change a piece by inverting the image and how using different ink effects can change your finished print.
After you catered lunch and coffee you will start your main project of a 15cmx15cm piece from an image you bring with you, or from one of our preprinted designs.
Using what you learnt from the morning session and with guidance from Rhain you will carve and print your final piece. You will learn to print your blocks both by hand and with a press, so you will be able to work on your skills once you leave for the day.
While you are carving during the day Rhain will cover all your introduction to printmaking questions like the difference and purpose of the variety of gouges, the difference between working on lino, vinyl, and ezy-carve products, the difference between water and oil-based inks (and which one is her favourite and why), and so much more.

Rhain DiPilla

Rhain is a woman of many hats, she is the founder and driving force behind The Old Auction House, and is endlessly passionate about the accessibility of everyday people to 'the arts' in all its forms. Rhain grew up in the glass studio with her father and is now one half of Leadlight By Ettore a multi-generational glass arts studio on site at The Old Auction House where she and her father teach their 80 term students and around 250+ weekend students in various glass arts each year.

While Rhain loves teaching glass, glass arts is not her passion, that is Printmaking and Bookbinding...the smaller and weirder the better. Her work draws heavily from her interest in Meso-American mythology and life long love of little things. As far as Rhain is concerned it doesn't matter what it is, wouldn't it be better at 1/16th of the size and twice as intricately decorated?
Rhain has been teaching since finishing school first IT and now glass and craft, no matter what she is teaching she shares all of her knowledge in a calm methodical way that makes every student succeed.

The Old Auction House is an independently run multi-use arts precinct located in the regional Victorian town of Kyneton, just an hour north of Melbourne. Housed in a historic weatherboard building, which served as the much loved Ferris auction rooms for over 80 years, the precinct opened in April 2017 and is home to a variety of artistic spaces.
The Old Auction House is currently home to a retail shop specialising in quality Australian handmade items, four working artist studios including local glass artists Leadlight By Ettore, a teaching space for visiting artists, and two gallery spaces with rotating exhibitions.
The Old Auction House is open 7 days and the entire space has been renovated to be accessible for those with prams, wheelchairs, and mobility issues.
The Old Auction House has a focus on community engagement in the arts. Each studio runs a variety of classes with different artists and materials throughout the year.
