This specially curated 5-day intensive workshop offers participants an insight into the training undertaken by classically trained masters. Using master drawings to painting from life as well as understanding how to gather artistic resources for future artworks and ideas. This workshop provides a well-rounded training program for beginners and developing artists. Join us for an enriching journey into the world of classical artistry and craftsmanship.
Led by the practicing and prolific artist Pilar De La Torre, this 5-day intensive workshop takes participants on a journey through a sequence of subjects that provide a comprehensive exploration of different classical training approaches as well as materials.
Each day of the workshop will concentrate on a distinct component, that when combined, provides participants access to a wealth of artistic technical knowledge.
Monday 24th June - Friday 28th June 2024
Day One: Drawing from the Masters
Our workshop will commence with the unique opportunity to refine your understanding of light, shape, tone, texture, and modelling of the form using master drawings. Participants will have the opportunity to copy a Master drawing from some of the greatest Master artists in history, using select images as references. This experience will deepen your appreciation and mastery of drawing techniques inspired by the artistic geniuses of the past.
Day Two: Drawing from Classical Casts
This important class offers students the opportunity to draw from a plaster cast which allows for an experience to working from a 3D object rather than a 2D image. Each cast is carefully set up and lit to enhance your understanding of light, shape, tone, texture, and modelling of the form, providing a deep dive into the timeless art of drawing from plaster casts.
Day Three: Life Drawing
On the third day of our intensive workshop, you will have the opportunity to draw from a life model using a variety of materials and strategies. Learning to draw the figure is one of the most vital aspects of art education. A toolbox of strategies will be explored so that you can manage 2min to long poses. This experience will allow you to confidently approach a life drawing session and enjoy the process of capturing the human form on paper.
Day Four: Still Life in Oil Paints
On day four of our workshop, we transition to painting in oils. Students will delve into colour theory and understand how it is possible to create a painting using a limited palette of just 4 tubes of paint. You will be delighted by how, in just one day, you will paint a still life from observation, exploring the rich and vibrant world of oil painting.
Day Five: Watercolour Journaling
On the final day of our workshop, participants will have the opportunity to learn how to use what is considered one of the most challenging mediums: watercolour paints. Building on the drawing and painting experiences from the previous days, we will teach you how to use a watercolour and drawing journal—a valuable asset for all artists whether beginner or developing. A useful method of building skills; gathering visual information for future painting ideas in any other medium.
