Join Michele at the magnificent Clifton School of Arts for hands-on workshops to learn Shibori, the Japanese art of resist-dyeing.
Shibori means to bind, wring or squeeze. It encompasses a wide range of resist-dyeing techniques for embellishing cloth, which has been used in Japan from as early as the 8th century. It is a magical process and produces exquisite patterns.
You will learn a range of simple techniques that include folding, pleating, binding and stitching. Michele will guide you through these methods to create sample squares and your choice of a scarf, tea towel or tote bag, after which you will transform your pieces with the magic of indigo.
The workshops run over two days so that you can attend either of the one-day sessions or both days. Numbers are limited and all materials will be provided for you.
Course outline:
Day one: stitch and gather
Michele will take you through a series of stitched resist techniques to produce some intricate patterns, ready to dye with indigo. While the stitched patterns are a little more labour-intensive than those taught in day two, the results are beautiful and more organic.
Day two: fold, pleat, wrap and bind
The techniques in this workshop focus on bolder, geometric patterns that utilize simple folding, wrapping, pleating and binding in preparation to dye your pieces in the indigo vat.
Please note: you can choose to attend either the one-day session or both days by selecting your ticket at checkout.

I'm a practicing artist and community educator and have taught textiles and drawing at a tertiary level in Sydney, Wollongong and Perth for over three decades.
I have exhibited across Australia for many years, and in Singapore and India, focusing on textiles and installation. A major survey of my textile works was held at Tamworth Regional Gallery in 2018.
As well as having a studio-based art practice, I enjoy teaching small groups and sharing my skills and knowledge.
I live and work in the Illawarra, south of Sydney, and run workshops in slow stitch, embroidery, mending and shibori. I focus on skills-based learning and ensure that class numbers are kept low so that each person gets individual attention throughout the session.
Come along to one of my workshops and allow me to set you on a journey of cloth, craft and creative practice.
