Are you an artist looking to expand your skills? Or you are dreaming to learn how to paint portraits? In this six-part course with Tatyana Soboleva, you will learn from beginning how to draw and paint portraits.
This course is designed fo artists who already paint but are not confident in portraiture and want to learn how to do that. Any beginner artist, no matter what style he or she works in, can benefit from learning the fundamentals as taught in European art education.
Tatyana's teaching method emphasises the classical method in representing a scene or portraying a person. She will teach the main components of a drawing curriculum – composition, anatomy, proportions, perspective.
From these learnings, which will be taught over six sessions, you will be able to develop your own distinctive style.
What you'll learn across the course:
  • The fundamental concepts of drawing including composition, proportions, perspective and construction of a drawing.
  • Human anatomy including the skull and facial muscles.
  • Construction of face elements such as an eye, a nose and lips.
  • Facial planes drawing.
  • Painting a partial copy of a famous artist’s work, in particular, parts of a face.
  • Painting a copy of a portrait by a great master.
  • Portrait painting in grisaille.
  • Mixing colours
  • A life portrait painting under your teacher's guidance.
  • Portrait painting in oil (optional).
You will finish this course with any work you have created and an array of new drawing and painting skills specific to portraits.
This class requires at least three students to run. In the unlikely event that we don't get this number of students, we'll cancel the class and fully refund you and inform you via email, so please watch your email a few days prior to the class.

I am a Fremantle based artist of the Russian Art School. From the time I was a student, my art was heavily influenced by the Russian greats including Repin, Serov, Korovin, as well as the European impressionists such as Degas, Renoir, Monet and Van Gogh. Thus my style can be defined as a blend of Realism and Impressionism.
