Painting Course: Oil Pastel and Inks

The classes are held on the balcony of Jeremy’s studio gallery in the Perth Hills, up amongst the trees with passing traffic of parrots, cockatoos and a variety of birds. There is limited room for easels, and as Jeremy works with you individually, we limit class sizes to a maximum of four students.Over four weeks, expert artist Jeremy Holton will guide you through the basics of drawing, painting, and scraping. Don't worry if you're a beginner. This class is designed to alleviate any fears and make you feel comfortable and confident about your artistic abilities.Each week, you will learn a different aspect of painting, from using photographs for inspiration to creating thumbnails in your sketchbook. You'll explore design techniques, learn about color theory, and experiment with oil pastels and pigmented ink mediums. Jeremy will be there every step of the way to assist and guide you in creating your unique artwork.At the end of the course, you will gain valuable skills and techniques that you can continue to practice at home and have a stunning painting to take home and display proudly. • Use photographs and AI (Artificial Intelligence) for inspiration to create several thumbnails in your sketchbook
• Learn about design, including negative space, tonal images, and joins
• Draw with an Artline 0.2 mm pen using spit and smudge to create tonal areas.
• Assisted by Jeremy select the best thumbnail to form the basis of your painting.
• Transfer it to watercolour paper using a pencil.
• Make a reed pen.
• Ink the image using a variety of marks inspired by Van Gogh's wonderful pen and ink drawings.

Week two:

• Learn about:
• Bonnard's colour patches, patterns, rejection of perspective, his lost wife and the always cat
• Klimt's unique landscape designs.
• Lloyd Rees stretched landscapes and tonal joins.
• Record the direction of the light in your painting
• Develop a colour design with instruction from Jeremy on the colour wheel, primary and secondary colours, tints and shades, and some colour theory.
• How to colour your painting with translucent oil pastels made from waxes and oils.
• Create unique patterns and marks.
• Layer pastels from light to dark.
• Blend into scintillating patches
• Destroy your work with pigmented ink (an important lesson for all artists).

Week three:

• Re-discover the image by scraping into the ink and pastel with a palette knife.
• Inspired by Van Gogh, I create interesting and varied marks.
• Observe the magic of your new painting emerging from the one that was destroyed
• Feel your way into the painting, letting it take over and guide you.

Week four:

• Work into the painting with pastel layers, inks, marks and scraping
• Allow the painting to blossom
• Techniques and skills to finalise the project: Jeremy will guide you, but the painting will always be uniquely yours.
• How to use varnish to bring out the colours and tonal contrasts.
• How to frame or mount the work for display at home or in a gallery.
• Take home your lovely painting.

Some people think it makes artists obsolete. However, AI is also a valuable resource for artists as we can use it to generate ideas and stimulate our imagination.Jeremy teaches that the process of creating art is essential, not the final product. If you let it, your painting will lead you to an alternative reality made from paint and canvas, and it's okay to use any resources to guide you on your journey.Artists have always drawn inspiration from the works of their peers, using them as a springboard for their creations. AI, in this context, serves a similar purpose. In Jeremy’s workshops, where appropriate, we leverage AI to refine our ideas for the paintings we envision, and even during the painting process, AI can be a source of creative inspiration. If you drink a lot of wine, he hopes you will bring your own at some time:)This class series runs over four consecutive sessions at the same time every week for $90 per session or $300 for four sessions.Suitable forSuitable for adults and kids (minimum 14 years old).Adult accompaniment is not required.This experience would also be a unique gift for someone who has always wanted to paint and would enjoy developing their abilities. This is not a paint-and-sip workshop. It will take you beyond the trivial as you interact with the painting, learn new techniques, listen to the painting and let it lead you to on a path of discovery.
