On the search for unique Perth activities? Learn how to make basic knots using Japanese traditional paper cords "Mizuhiki" and make your very own Samurai helmet frame "Kabuto" with Az from Happy JP Designs!
Mizuhiki is a traditional Japanese art, using a Mizuhiki paper cord. Yes, they are made of paper! The core of the Mizuhiki cord is twisted paper and then dyed or wrapped with coloured thread, then knotted into shapes.
This technique has been used for centuries for gift giving decorations including gorgeous engagement gifts, and for gift money envelopes. It is even used to tie a Samurai’s and Sumo wrestler’s top knot!
In this fun class, you'll learn how to tie basic knots (three types of knots) that will transform simple Mizuhiki cords into Samurai helmet and irises frame that you can take home.
Az will demonstrate how the Mizuhiki cord is used to produce gift giving for special occasions. Tying knots has lots of symbolic meanings in Japanese culture, such as "tie the knot" "heart to heart" "appreciation of your kindness" "congratulations" and so on. Join Az for an unique experience!

Hi, I'm Az. I'm an Interior Designer and a Japanese Mizuhiki artist.
What is Japanese Mizuhiki art?
Mizuhiki is a traditional Japanese paper cord used originally for special occasions, such as engagement gifts from the groom's family to the bride's family, and for gift money envelopes. Yes, they are made of paper. The core of Mizuhiki cord is twisted paper and then dyed or wrapped with coloured thread, then knotted into shapes. It is also used to tie a Samurai’s and Sumo wrestler’s top knot! Today we use it for making jewellery and other beautiful objects.
I moved from Canberra to Perth in January 2023, and now my new art activities will be refreshed and am seeking further goals to share with more people. "Tie the knots" I also sell items from my Etsy store under the name happyJPdesigns.
