Learn and master how to make basic Japanese paper cord knots - Awabi knot - with Az from Happy JP Designs.
Mizuhiki is a traditional Japanese art, using a Mizuhiki paper cord. Yes, they are made of paper! The core of the Mizuhiki cord is twisted paper and then dyed or wrapped with coloured thread, then knotted into shapes. This technique has been used for centuries for gift-giving decorations, including gorgeous engagement gifts, and for gift money envelopes. It is even used to tie a Samurai’s and Sumo wrestler’s top knot!
In this fun class, you'll learn how to tie a basic knot - the Awabi Knot - which the more you pull the ends, the tighter the knot gets. It is the symbol of "tying the knot" and "connection to people".
The knots you make will be used for table decorations for Christmas and Japanese New Year's Day and gift money envelopes.
Az will also demonstrate how to make the "crane neck" part, using a coiling technique, which you can review later with a video. And she will show you how to use the knots for gift wrapping as well as making earrings.
Tying knots has lots of symbolic meanings in Japanese culture, such as "tying the knot, " "heart to heart, " "appreciation of your kindness, " "congratulations, " and so on. So they are perfect gift ideas for weddings, paper anniversaries (first wedding anniversary), and to give to close friends.
*Please note that the venue has a 60m long walkway from the street entrance and there are stairs. It is on Hensman Street, South Perth, near Royal Perth Golf Club, and the exact location will be advised after your booking is completed.

Hi, I'm Az. I'm an Interior Designer and a Japanese Mizuhiki artist.
What is Japanese Mizuhiki art?
Mizuhiki is a traditional Japanese paper cord used originally for special occasions, such as engagement gifts from the groom's family to the bride's family, and for gift money envelopes. Yes, they are made of paper. The core of Mizuhiki cord is twisted paper and then dyed or wrapped with coloured thread, then knotted into shapes. It is also used to tie a Samurai’s and Sumo wrestler’s top knot! Today we use it for making jewellery and other beautiful objects.
I moved from Canberra to Perth in January 2023, and now my new art activities will be refreshed and am seeking further goals to share with more people. "Tie the knots" I also sell items from my Etsy store under the name happyJPdesigns.
