Looking for fun things to do in Perth with like-minded friends? Join Sophie Mahir of Tones & Texture for her one-day beginner-friendly weaving workshop and get hands-on making your own woven wall hanging in a few simple steps.
This is the workshop for you if you just love being creative, maybe you’ve done a few crafty things before, you’ve always fancied trying weaving; or you just need a fun day out.
Sophie is what you might call a ‘modern weaver’, encouraging an ‘anything goes’ approach to creating her woven wall hangings. One of the many things she loves about this craft is the endless possibilities and you’ll never find her answering your question: “can I do…in my weaving?” with a no!
This is the perfect place to really get your creative on, try things out, safe in the knowledge you’ll be making something spectacular. Most people are amazed with what they make, without any experience at all.
You’ll get the chance to choose your desired colour theme, be inspired by different design ideas and learn a few basic weaving techniques, including a variety of ways to knot and create fabulous texture!
Get creative and wow your friends and family with new skills you've learnt at this fun weaving workshop in Perth!
Here’s what you’ll learn:
  • First you’ll discover how to use all the weaving tools and choose the ones you prefer.
  • Then you’ll learn how to ‘warp up’ your hand loom, so it’s fully ready to use.
  • From there we’ll discuss a bit about colours and design and how to put together a pleasing selection and look for your weaving.
  • You’ll try these out on a small loom first (and if you're a quick weaver you can end up completing this trial one too!)
  • Then you’ll start work on your fabulous fringe using Rya knots and loops and work your way up the body of your weaving.
  • Lastly, you’ll take the weaving off the loom and finish it off by sewing in ends and adding a hanging pole; so you can proudly take it home.
And don’t worry if you’ve never done anything like this before - Sophie will be guiding and assisting you every step of the way!
This weaving workshop is perfect for you if:
  • You’re looking for something relaxing.
  • You love trying new art or crafty things.
  • You’ve always wanted to give weaving a try.
  • You’re a total beginner and happy to learn.
  • You’re looking for something different.
  • You’re ready to have fun with wool!
Indulge in a glass of wine (or non-alcoholic beverage) and a light grazing platter while you work and take home a vibrant mini weaving handmade by you!
Sophie offers small public or private classes in her studios, where you’ll get plenty of 1-2-1 help.
As well as private or hens parties at your own (minimum of 6 people).
Or larger groups in a venue to be determined according to your requirements.

Knowledge required
This workshop is beginner-friendly but also suitable for those who have attended one of the half day weaving and wine workshops.

What you'll get
  • You will get the use of a wooden hand loom, weaving tools, and an abundance of beautiful coloured yarns.
  • One glass of wine or non-alcoholic beverage (you can BYO after that).
  • There will be a lunch grazing platter, snacks, and basic tea, coffee and juice.
  • A chance to browse through Sophie’s original weaving collection, plus any work in progress in the studio.
  • Oh and of course your super patient and experienced teacher!
What to bring
There is nothing specific you need to bring, just yourself (and maybe a friend). Although you are welcome to bring any wool or fabric strips you'd like to include to make your weaving more personal.
You can BYO additional beverages if you wish. Or any snacks if you have specific dietary needs.

Hi - I’m Sophie Mahir, former semi abstract acrylic painter, now turned fibre artist, originally from the UK and now happily living and creating my weavings in sunny Perth, Australia.
I have always loved different yarns and textiles and started my own knitting business when I was just 18. Going on to gain a Waldorf Art Teaching Diploma and teaching children art and crafts for 8 years; till the desire to create my own art took over and I went full time as a professional painter.
From there I went deeper into business, qualifying as a life & business coach and trainer; specialising in women’s business start-ups and eventually setting up online as an art business coach and educator.
In early 2024 I made the decision to focus back into my creativity and officially making the switch into fibre art with my weavings and weaving workshops in Perth.
I'm passionate about living creatively and enabling others to explore their full potential too. I believe in the power of doing something artistic not just for your own expression; but also for relaxing, mindfulness and improving your mental and physical health.
