Print Making
Would you love to make your own cards and wrapping paper? Or maybe beautiful layered artworks and fabric designs?
Foam block printing offers a similar aesthetic to traditional lino block printing but with a simpler, more accessible approach.
Your tutor for this workshop is experimental printmaker Rachael Lee who will guide you through this exciting process.
In this class, you'll have fun designing your shapes and cutting them out using scissors to create a series of foam-shaped printing blocks. Your shapes could be geometric, abstract, or inspired by the natural world.
You'll print your foam shapes onto quality papers to create greeting cards and a layered print 28cm x 19cm.
You’ll gain skills in:
  • Designing your blocks and using tools to create textured surfaces
  • Getting the best results when hand printing your blocks
  • Building up layers in your image
  • Creating exciting colour combinations
  • Balancing texture, shape, and line in your composition
Take home your uniquely made printing blocks to continue hand printing at home. You can create all sorts of gifts for your family and friends including cards and tags, artworks, wrapping paper and printed textiles.

The studio is located in a commercial complex on the corner of Earnshaw Road and Depot Street, near the old Golden Circle Cannery. As you enter the complex, look for the number #13 and the Art from the Urban Wilderness signs. There are 3 onsite car parks. During the week, we recommend you park on the road and walk up the driveway. If you have lots of gear you can drop it off and then park. If you need to park close to the door for accessibility reasons, let us know prior so we can reserve a park for you. On weekends or after hours, you can park within the complex in a marked car parking bay (not in front of roller doors), as its very quiet then.

Rachael Lee

Rachael Lee approaches her art practice with the same curiosity that she brings to exploring her local natural surroundings. She works with non-toxic experimental printmaking techniques, creating layered works using linocut, etched linocut, stencils, collagraph, drypoint and monoprinting. By combining shape, line and texture in her prints she seeks to highlight the underlying patterns, rhythms and soothing effects of nature.

Rachael is passionate about sharing her printmaking knowledge and over the last ten years has exhibited, given artist talks and run workshops for teachers, students and community groups in Southeast Queensland.

Art from the Urban Wilderness is a large community art studio located at Hive Studios in Banyo, northside Brisbane/Meanjin.
The studio was founded by artist Sandra Pearce in 2021, and specialises in printmaking, papermaking, drawing, sketching and artist books. We offer workshops, courses, social art days, and artist talk events.
Our mission is to build an inclusive art community that nurtures creative authenticity, confidence and resilience. We also believe in the power of art to break the cycle of disaffection towards nature, to enrich lives and inspire care for the environment.
Our studio is also available for hire for creative events, meetings, gatherings, and art workshops.
