Create a unique Boro (Japanese patchwork) Cushion Cover using Sashiko (straight stitch embroidery) and learn all about visible mending at this unique class in Sumner.
Choose your background cushion cover colour (beige, blue or yarn dyed black linen, subject to availability), followed by embellishing patches (made up from my collection of vintage and new Japanese cotton, silk and linen fabrics) plus four different colours embroidery threads and start stitching away.
Learn about the Japanese technique of Sashiko stitching while being aware of principles such as up-cycling, respect for the discarded and slow stitching process to practice mindfulness and relaxation.
A complete kit to make a 40cm x 40cm cushion cover is included in your class cost, option to purchase extra kits and supplies (including Zipper Bags and Drawstring Pouches available at my Studio).
The hand-stitching in class is beginner-friendly, the back of the cushion comes with a ready inserted zipper so that the project can easily be completed at home, either with a sewing machine or sewn by hand.

Hi, my name is Nicole. I am a retired Travel Agent with a serious passion for creating beautiful hand-made products using natural fibres and incorporating up-cycled materials.
I developed a fascination for Japanese Arts & Crafts in my early twenties when I first worked with Japanese tourists and visited Japan. In 2019 I qualified as an Ikebana teacher (Japanese art of flower arranging - Sogetsu School) still attending classes and workshops on a regular basis, having recently obtained my 3rd grade teachers diploma.
My creative passion has also incorporated a dab in pottery to make my own Ikebana vases and designing and carving stamps to print my own unique patterns incorporating some of our local flower and fauna, having attended a workshop in October 2024 with Rowan Sivyer, the queen of Modern Block Printing and learning new techniques.
Having attended various Boro & Sashiko workshops as well as having travelled through Japan on a textile tour in December 2018 I learned more about Boro, Sashiko and various other embroidery techniques such as Kogin and Chiku Chiku not to mention Indigo Shibori dying. I refreshed my knowledge on all of the above during a hands on craft tour of Hobard in August 2024.
I love sharing my knowledge and hold regular workshops in my Studio, situated on the Mezzanine Level of an Industrial Shed (stairs, no lift available) in Sumner Park.
