What you'll do
Never sewn before or it's been a while since you've touched a sewing machine? Then this class is for you! In this class, you will learn how to sew, use a pattern and create a simple pair of shorts or long pants for yourself or a loved one.Patterns and all sewing equipment will be provided and all you need to bring is your favourite material - maybe a lovely linen for yourself for those flowing summer oh-so-cool pants or a snazzy bright cartoon print for a little one in your life.The day will start with learning all about threading and using the sewing machine, straight and curved sewing and neatening seam edges with zig-zag. Once you are comfortable with this, we will move on to learning the basics of fabrics and how to lay out your pattern and cut it out. Then it's on to putting your creation together with the techniques of plain seams, elastic casing and hems taught step by step as you go along. We will finish the workshop talking about sewing machines and simple ideas to jazz up your designs with embellishments, patch pockets and contrasting fabrics. You'll also learn about where to source patterns and fabrics to continue your sewing journey beyond the workshop.By the end of the class, you'll leave with newfound sewing skills, a completed project and ideas for future sewing endeavours!

I am Carole, an experienced high school textiles teacher and creator and collector of anything textiles. The Yellow Cottage is where I live and the Studio is in the garden and where I create. I would love to share my passion for textiles and teaching with you, to get you started or re-started sewing your own clothes, super cute toys and gorgeous things for your home or as gifts.Classes are held in a nearby high school with an extensive range of equipment, enough sewing machines for everyone to have their own (or bring your own) and plenty of space to spread out - the perfect environment for learning and creativity.Come along, be inspired and gain the skills you need to become an expert sewist in your own version of the Sewing Bee.
