Whether you're a seasoned urban sketcher or just starting out, this affordable and relaxed meet-up class offers the perfect opportunity to develop your street sketching skills. Led by a practising artist tutor, you'll receive hands-on guidance while sketching the lively streets of Rozelle with a small, friendly group.
Grab your sketchbook and pencils and start capturing local street scenes, iconic buildings, green spaces, and skylines. Learn key techniques for observing, composing, simplifying complex scenes, creating focal points, and expressing the mood of your surroundings.
Join for a single session or come regularly to build confidence, refine your skills, and immerse yourself in the art of urban sketching.
Outcomes will depend on your level of experience and drawing ability.
Beginners will be introduced to:
  • Urban sketching as an art genre
  • Fundamentals and techniques for simple perspective
  • Tips and exercises to improve observation skills
  • Using negative space in drawings
  • The basics of framing, editing and simplifying scenes
  • Exercises to rapidly capture scenes with immediacy
  • The importance of capturing a sense of time and place.
More experienced urban sketchers will:
  • Have the opportunity to practise and improve with feedback and guidance
  • Have the opportunity to explore new media, such as watercolour wash
  • Work on adding tonal value and colour, or incorporate figures into street sketches.


Knowledge required
This urban sketching course is designed for all levels of drawing ability. Beginners are welcome.
 
What to bring
Please dress appropriately for the weather, wear walking shoes and bring:
  • A4 or A5 sketchbook
  • 2B and 4B pencils and sharpener
  • Acrylic and kneadable erasers
  • Water bottle, lunch/snacks
  • Hat / sun protection

Elinor Pickard

Elinor Pickard


Elinor Pickard is a practising artist and a painter with drawing at the centre of her practice. She has a BA Visual Arts and Grad Dip from Sydney College of the Arts. Elinor also went on to complete a Masters in Museum Studies from the University of Sydney.

Her interest in fine and decorative arts is reflected in her paintings, specifically those centred on botanical and floral subjects, rich with colour and often incorporating her fine gilding techniques. Elinor also enjoys urban sketching and capturing the interactions between people, and the human figure within the built urban environment.
An attentive and encouraging art educator, Elinor has been teaching adults since 2016. She has also run regular children's art classes since 2015.
