Obvara is a 12th-century Eastern European technique that involves dipping a hot vessel into a fermented mixture of flour, yeast, sugar, and water, followed by rapid cooling. This thrilling process creates unique and spectacular patterns before your eyes.
This class is for potters who can make their own vessels out of Raku clay following specific sizing by wheel or hand build. If you need help making your vessels, please reach out to have a chat about how we can help with that.
MAKE your two vessels (prior to class)
  • Create two vessels with clear openings (minimum 4cm), ensure walls are not too thin.
  • Maximum dimensions: height 12 cm, width/depth 10 cm.
  • Use RAKU clay (which does not shrink when bisqued) - we recommend Keanes White Raku Clay.
  • Bisque fire at 900° or 1000° before delivery.
  • Drop off at least three days before class.
Remember - size is important! If the size constraints are not followed, only one vessel might be loaded into the kiln to accommodate all of the participants' pieces.
DECORATE - Obvara firing with Jasmine
Jasmine will run through and demonstrate the various techniques involved with the Obvara dipping process. You will then start by experimenting on a BONUS ceramic dish (supplied), then bring your creations to life as you apply these techniques to your two vessels.
By the end of the class, you will have not only learned more about the Obvara technique but also have your uniquely patterned vessels to take home and admire.

I’m Jasmine, a ceramic artist, business owner, and teacher with a deep passion for ceramics. My home studio is located in Banora Point, northern NSW, just south of the Gold Coast. I have cherished ceramics since childhood and, in recent years, have had the joy of sharing my enthusiasm through leading experiences focused on Alternative Firings. Currently, I offer three distinct methods: Obvara, Saggar, and Feather and Hair. To explore each method in detail, please check out the class information.
Beautiful Things is more than just a name; it embodies a philosophy. As an artist, I believe in the significance of surrounding ourselves with beauty. Our ceramic homewares showcase unique colors and forms derived from various traditional and alternative firing techniques, all of which are stunning.
I look forward to teaching you how to decorate a vessel and create something truly beautiful.
