Woodworking
In this hands-on course, you’ll construct a sturdy, versatile, Roubo-style workbench that embodies durability, functionality, and sustainability. This bench is designed to be the foundation of your woodworking journey, with a focus on practical design and longevity.
  • The workbench itself is crafted from solid reclaimed Douglas Fir and includes a quick-release face vice, with the option to add a second, smaller vice as a tail vice, providing flexible clamping solutions for various woodworking tasks.
  • A full-length tool rack spans the bench, keeping essential tools within easy reach, while two traditional holdfasts offer additional work-holding for detailed tasks.
  • A lower shelf provides additional storage for frequently used jigs and current project items, enhancing your workspace organisation.
  • You’ll also have the option to customise the bench size to fit your needs, up to a maximum of 540mm wide and 1.7m long, making it adaptable to your space.
Building your own workbench sets the stage for growth as a woodworker, and having a solid workbench is the core of any productive and enjoyable workshop. The workbench design builds on centuries of woodwork knowledge and wisdom and is based on all the best features of the benches we use every day to teach and build work at Among The Trees.
This is our most substantial course to date, and armed with the skills and knowledge from this course, you'll have the confidence to take on increasingly ambitious projects, refining your techniques and expanding your capabilities to a whole new level of woodwork.
As participants work at different speeds and come with varied skills and experience, there may be aspects of the workbench that will need to be completed at home. However, by the end of the course, every student will leave with a fully functional workbench and all the skills required to finish any remaining elements independently. Additionally, you’ll gain the confidence and knowledge needed to make custom improvements to your bench in the future, allowing it to grow and adapt alongside your woodworking skills.
For added convenience, delivery of the workbench can be arranged for an additional fee upon request.
This course is aimed at students 16+ and with some woodwork experience. If you haven't begun your woodworking journey, we recommend starting with our Hand Tool Woodwork Fundamentals workshop or one of our other beginners courses.
The course is run using a blend of hand tools and power tools so you need to be aware that there is an element of physicality involved, and most of the work is carried out standing up.
Add-on available for this class
  • Additional 175mm Quick release vice ($199)
You can add these when you book (optional).

Knowledge required
This workshop is aimed at people with some experience with woodwork. For students with no experience, we recommend completing our Hand Tool Woodwork Fundamentals workshop before booking this course. It is open to anyone 16 years and over.

Among the Trees is an ethical and sustainability based start-up for reclaimed timber located in Marrickville.
Saving timber from demolitions or other discarded uses and making it available to the public through a retail timber shop and woodworking classes. Accessibility to wood doesn't just mean being wheelchair friendly (which we are), it also means helping customers understand how to use and source reclaimed timber. To make it as easy as possible to work with, we offer custom machining and glueing, so the timber in our store can be squared, resurfaced and cut to specific dimensions. We also help empower individuals to have the confidence to undertake woodworking projects by offering woodworking beginners classes that are taught with simple hand tools.

Lumberyards and wood workshops can be intimidating sometimes, ATT is one of the few places that caters not only to architects, planners, homeowners as well as carpenters and tradespeople but also to customers that have little to no woodworking experience and are embarking on DIY and student projects or trying their hand at repair, renovating or building.
Our workshop at Among The Trees is set up to be the perfect space to learn about hand tools, reclaimed timber, and woodworking. We’ve been hard at work collecting, restoring and tuning all the tools required to learn woodworking, and a few extra ones as well.

All-in-all, everyone that is interested in wood is welcome!
